    Mini 14 / Mini 30

Anyone or any agencies still using mini 14's or mini 30's for patrol rifles?

Not that I know of. Most are using AR/M16 platforms.

The Mini 14 is a very nice, handy little rifle. I love mine.

Thinking about picking up a new 14 to ride in the patrol truck with me, any thoughts or ideas on customizing one?

Mine is stock. I bought three (Ruger) 20 round magazines at a gun show. Pricey, but after market mags for the Mini suck.

We are going to them soon

By early 2009 we will be switching to the Mini 14. Right now, we have Ruger .40 rifles, and they work great. In fact, one of our officers made use of one during a recent incident, and it ended the threat perfectly. However, the rifles are old and managment wants to update.

Good guns at good prices. I've heard tell that they aren't as good at grouping all shots together, but they're more than accurate enough for patrol use.

First upgrade is getting 20 round mags instead of the 5 rounders that come with it. Other than that, a good sling and a good scope and/or red dot sight are about it for customizing them.

A couple of deparmtments use them down here ( including one of the largest state agencies here, who used them in several shootings, who just quit issuing them after twent years of use). Despite their sometimes bad press, I haven't seen the world end for any of the officers carrying one, despite their use in several shootings.

Sure better than nothing (in the Miami shootout, almost all of the wounds the FBI agents received, fatal and non-fatal, were from a Mini-14 (the FBI had lots of M-16's, they were all sitting back in the office or in their trunks).

Ed Mireles was one of my instructors in 1988 and iin all of the conversations we had with him about that day, I never remember him saying that he was glad Matix only had a Mini-14 instead of an AR, or things could have really been bad.

Lack of custom parts is the reason they are not real popular.

I owned one for a while and enjoyed shooting it. A few of our CID officers are issued these rifles and they work fine. I went to the AR15 platform because the parts are endless. I have two now.

I've really tried hard to like that rifle, honestly. I've owned 4 over the years.
The Mini-30 especially was a horror story.

I'm reminded of a TDC prison escape back about 1994. The inmate rushed the fence between two guard towers and the guards expended 30 rounds from a mini-14 for no hits. He made it over the fence and was not recaptured for 4 days. The only injuries he suffered were from the razor wire.

Now that prices are comparable to an AR. ($650 vs $722 locally) I see no reason to even give them a second glance.

Ruger could solve the accuracy and magazine problems in a minute but somehow have not bothered to do so since the darn thing came out in the 70's.

Product improvement/parts availability is the biggest beef I have with Ruger on all of their rifles. (Also being priced double what it should be.)

We have one left, as soon as the undersheriff gets his M16,
    it is gone.
Ruger's refusal to provide QUALITY FACTORY 30 magazines to anyone,
has pretty well done them in.
Even KHP is considering getting AR15s out here..
Magazine changes are a pain compared to an AR15.
On a clear night, I can see the other deputies emergency lights at least 10 miles away.
But it isnt flat here LOL

Hey Axe i seen a previous thread you posted about having some good study material for TCLEOSE. I am currently enrolled in an academy and could use any insight to actual testable Q's. We get very broad learning objectives in class and could use any help narrowing down what actually to study. I am making high 80's so far on exams but would like to do better. Thanks in advance my email is gregory.key20@yahoo.com
