    Thought provoking

Let’s try a thought provoking thread. With the current trend in handgun manufacturing, heck gun manufacturing in general, to make utilitarian designs and use more composite materials, what firearm in particular do you feel epitomizes the class that manufacturers used to incorporate in their work. I say work because I think they used to actually used to put work into their guns and didn’t just mass produce.

I’ll start with what I believe is an absolute classic handgun, the Parabellum-Pistole or “Luger”.
As rifles go I absolutely love the lines of a Pennsylvania rifle

Our firearms have to be registered here.

One day a woman came in to the country station I worked in to register three rifles. She didn't want to drag them out the car in the main street and scare everyone so asked if I would escort her into the station with them.

The lady was about 50 and reminded me of my mother. Not the kind that would be into guns.

Imagine my surprise when we got to her car and she pulled out 3 huge rifles that looked just like what you pictured.

They were each hand crafted and she was some mad black powder freak!!! The intricate woodwork was amazing and they were the 3 finest looking pieces of firearm artwork I have ever seen.

    Very impressive, and very expensive!!!!

    Nice pic.

The Colt Python. The only "massed produced" gun in the colt line that was all hand fitted. And a b-e-a-utiful gun.

It is interesting that you post that particular style rifle. I just finished a book on the history of the sniper. Aside from the utilization of crossbows and culverins early on, colonial woodsmen became very proficient with this style rifle as necessity in hunting. They were recruited as snipers, one's that would reak havoc on the battle field eliminating officers with well aimed shots from areas of concealment. With it being longer and more ergonomic it allowed for the rifle to be seated into the shoulder with a better cheek weld than what was currently in use by the Brits and Colonial Armies. If I remember correctly the design was taken from Jager style rifles in Central Europe.

Yeah it's said many of the features and history of the 'rifle' as compared to the smooth bore muskets came from the German immigrants and German rifles like the one you mentioned.
