Some points since I'm coming into the thread late.

Glocks suck. I turn rookies off of Glocks by handing them a Sig P226 or S&W M&P then watching their scores rise. .

The Beretta PX4 is an outstanding duty weapon. 17rds in .40. Remote possibility of kabooms due to a completely supported case. (No feed ramp on the barrel) I carry one. As soon as they become available I'm getting the compact version. (August)

The guy you shoot is not going to be able to tell the difference between 9mm, .40, .357 Sig, or .45acp. I carry a .40 simply because dept ammo is free in that caliber.:D I'd be quite happy with any of the others.

I'll second what Norm said for the lady. Get a 4" revolver. Half the price of the suggested autos and simple and reliable as can be. The only caveat is that I'd insist on stainless.;)
Don't try and outweird me, I find weirder things than you in my breakfast burrito.

Stainless looks nice, but for some reason I think black looks more professional for LEOs.

I used to be a fan of the all-black gun. It just looks to bad-a$$. Cold, utilitarian. But as I've grown older (and better), I've begun to gently stroke my inner pimp. Now I think an all chrome gun, polished to a mirror finish or, better yet, an all gold semi-auto covered in fillagree and scrollwork like a modern day pirate gun would be best. Imagine the look on mf'rs faces when you pull that brilliant gold work of art out! Professionalism and guns? funk dat!

It's not that you have to depress the grip safety so much when you load, but when conductine emergency-action reloads one handed and racking the slide out of slide-lock the grip safety needs depression.

OK, makes sense now. I was trying to figure out how/why you'd need to depress a safety to insert the magazine.

I like the feel of the XD from the one that I've handled, but I just can't see myself buying a weapon with a grip safety.

LOL.....that's why I carry a GLOCK far easier to spell! :D

I carry a Glock 22 on duty with a Glock 27 as a back-up. I love them both and don't see any reason to try anything different. I have never fired the Springfield XD's but I've heard good things. Try them both out at a local range. See which one feels better to you.

I got into XD's after reading about some Glocks, after being heavily used in Oregon, having a blowout problem. I reasoned that since I was doing a lot of IDPA competition shooting at the time, I'd rather not put a lot of wear on my M27, since I still carry and qualify with it for HR 218.

The XD, less expensive, is quite similar enough to the Glock to suit the purpose of both competition and training as well as a possible backup if I do have a malfunction of some type with my M27. I can't say I won't carry it instead at some point.

I have lived by GLOCK for a few years, carried Glock as duty weapon for years..Thought GLOCK was the only pistol out there....Until... I bought my SIG P229...I now realize there is more to life than Glock... SIG is awesome...but Glock is awesome as well... as for Springfield, I'm in the same boat, I really want to fire one and have had offers to trade my Glock 22 for a Springfield XD.45... But just don't have experience with them...

The Springfield may be just as good, but it has yet to have time to prove it. It is just a Glock-wannbe in a different wrapper.

If you can, just shoot them both and see what you like. I would give the Glock the nod, if for no other reason than a proven track record.
Switch, you are so right. I asked our gunsmiths who are currently looking for a replacement for the 5946, about the XD's. We currently have authorized the Glock 19, Sig and the Smith 5946. The Smith M&P in 9 mm is currently being put thru the ringer, in hopes it will replace the 5946. Reguarding the XD's....it their (gunshops) opinion they aren't robust enough. No where near the reliability of the Glock and Steel Smiths or Sig. They are great pistols, just not for our enviorment.

You can't kill the Glock or 5946.

    I have both...

The XD is much better for my wife, because it tolerates limp-wristing much better without jamming. I also like the crisp, well-defined trigger breakpoint better than Glock.

The only negatives I've found with the XD are:
    1. If you get it wet, take the firing pin assembly out or have a gunsmith do it, dry all the parts, especially under the plastic bushing, and clean it good but don't oil it (oil will gum up firing pins on any gun) - Long story short, it rained on us for about 30 minutes during a match, and water traveled down the cocked indicator and got caught under the plastic bushing, which caused the cocked indicator pin to rust under the chrome plating. This reduced the firing pin velocity to the point that it wouldn't fire a cartridge a couple of weeks after that.
    2. The sights are harder to remove and repress than a Glock - So it was hard to find a gunsmith to change the sights out to TruGlo TFO's, because they break easily going back in. The same gunsmiths told me that Glocks were no problem.
    3. The leading edge of my barrel lockup block (the span of metal between the rails) tends to chip. This hasn't seemed to affect the function of the gun, but I've been through two of them so far, and the new one is chipping, too.

Any idea what they based their opinion on? May want to point them to this article:

Nice site. I haven't been there in awhile and the articles are interesting. My only complaint is that the articles are not dated, and I think they don't all list as many options as might be available now as opposed to when the article was written.

    I love mine.

They test the crap out of evrything. The M&P was initally rejected and is now back in the program, after S&W addressed some concerns. We found the ejection problems with the Glocks, which at first Glock didn't admit to. Now all Glock's have the "cut" in them. It took forever to replace our Ithaca 37 shotguns with the Mossberg 590's. Just because they were good enough for the Gov't, didn't mean they were good enough for us.

We dumped the Sig for a few years when we had problems and Sig didn't step up to the plate. They changed their tune and the gun, so they are authorized once again.

As bad as the NYPD can be, you gotta love em, they just don't bend over cause the mfgr says its good and does this or that and you need it. Just because we use it doesn't mean its good for every department, but other agencys know, it we use it, its been well tested.

    SpringfieldXD VS Glock

I have wanted a Glock for many years now, but after checking the XD out I left the store with a XD40 and XD45. Springfield has done a great job!

The few times I've shot the XD, I don't know why but for some reason the thumb safety is a little annoying, have NO idea why, I love the thumb safety on 1911's but not on the XD..I've been shooting Glocks for years though, started with the 19 (9mm) sold it, bought a 21 (45.) but after shooting pretty much every Glock model I prefer either the 22 or 23 (40.) for home defense..
