It was backwards when I was comparing the XD-40 and the Glock 23. My XD ended up costing about $30 less brand new than did the Glock (also brand new).

GLOCK,GLOCK,GLOCK....G27, etc....
I am doing research to buy a gun for protection. I am a female living alone and am about to get my handgun license. I have narrowed my choices down to a Glock (which I have fired before -- 15 years ago when I was in high school) and a Springfield XD (9mm). I have decided that I don't want a safety, because if I am going to pull the trigger, I really mean to pull the trigger. Any suggestions?

My main suggestion is that if you're going to buy a firearm, especially for personal protection get at least a .40... it has significantly more stopping power than a 9mm. And with both XDs and Glocks I've found their 9mm models to be less accurate than the larger calibre counterparts.
"deputy Z", it's been awhile but I'm curious which one did you go with?, I'm also looking into the glock or XD, the SO I'm going to be reserving for has us provide our own duty weapon.

I would rank calibers (in terms of stopping power) in the following order
.357, .45, .40, 9mm
NOW, with that said, I am with Norm. I would say that the differences in the stopping power between any of them is MINIMAL. You just need to be able to hit where you aim.
A 9mm is just fine as long as you load it with some quality ammunition (Winchester, Federal, etc.)
....and either the Glock or the Springfield is a fine choice. I would also give the Smit (not the Sigma) a look too. I have yet to hear anything bad about them. Now, me, I would buy the Glock... tried and true... and I am a creature of habit.![]()

First, and to get it said - the Sigma line from Smith are crap. Cheap guns are usually cheap for a reason. That being said, expensive guns aren't always better. Write those 2 things down and keep them with you at all times.
Second, buy good ammo and drop the bull**** about 9mm vs .45. It's just a dickwagging contest. Ever hear the Army guys ***** about the greentip ammo for the M4? Ever see the balistic tests between the carbide tip vs Federal LE rounds? Look it up - the caliber is not the issue, it's the ammo.
Second, Glock vs Springer is all about personal preference. Switch is a Glocker, and I'm a loyal Springer guy. The difference between the two is this:
1) the grip angle of the XD is canted the same as the 1911 - for obvious reasons. That's a shooter comfort.prefence issue, not a performance one
2) the XD has a grip safety - again for obvious reasons. How will this affect you as a shooter? Well, you will have to depress the grip safety when conducting your emergency reloads - including one handers. If you already do these using your holster or back of the knee, it's a non-issue. If not, then run withthe glock.
3) Glock has 5 letters, Springfield has 11.
search around and get a SIG, I just picked up a p220 for under $650.00. so that makes me a SIGer?

My agency issues the Glock 19. It is accurate, feels good in my hands and is just a plain joy to shoot. There was a thread on here a while back that had a story of an officer that got into a shootout with his Glock. The suspect shot at the officer, the bullet travelled along the slide of the Glock and hit the officer in the hand. The Glock continued to fire. If that is not reliable, I don't know what is!!! My Lt. also told me of a video he saw on the web where a 5 gal bucket was 1/2 filled with road salt and then with water. The Glock was placed in the bucket and left there for 2-3 days. When it was pulled out the only rust on the weapon was at the rear of the slide behind the sights. Durable?? I think so!!!!
I also own an XD .40 4", it also feels good in my hands. The balance when fully loaded is out of this world! The research I did says the XD is very reliable. I have not seen where it was put through any of the torture tests I've seen the Glock go through though.
All that being said. . . I love both guns. I can't choose my duty and we are not allowed to carry back ups, but if I could choose. . . it would be my XD if just for the calliber. And that is just personal preference.

Suspect: Why am I under arrest?
Me: For posession of CDS.
