i think that'll be my next handgun purchase, but i think i'm going to hold out for the .45 version. as much as i may like it, my 92 can never be replaced.

Just the other day I fired both of these weapons at the range with a friend. The range had the CX4 in the 9mm and the PX4 in the 40 Cal for rent.
First the CX4. This Carbine was incredibly accurate. I couldn't help but to group well - even rapid fire! I read in one forum that someone was getting tight groups at 200 yards. The range officer claimed to have grouped well at 100 yards, but said he never fired it farther than that. We put 50 rounds through the CX4 which had not been cleaned before we rented it and this Carbine NEVER Jammed!
I will be buying one soon. Was stuck between getting the 40 Cal or the 45 Cal version. I settled on the 40 Cal tonight, so it's just a matter of buying one now. You can get all kinds of accessories for the CX4, so dress it up however you choose!!! My budget says I'll wait to dress it up next year. : )
Now the PX4. The pistol feels great and handles great. I don't have big hands and I am not built like Aaaaanold either. Confession here - I haven't fired a weapon since getting out of the service and that was around 15 years ago!!! My first clip grouped perfectly - like riding a bike!!! Moved the target further down the range and still the accuracy was there. I have to tell you, it was a great day!!!
PX4 and jamming. The pistol was extremely filthy when handed to me. After 70 rounds we sustained 3 feed jams. The PX4 has a rotating barrel that needs to be kept properly oiled. Another probable cause could be the magazine. I did a lot of forum browsing on this issue and from what I read, people have fired thousands of rounds (or so they estimate) without a jam. When I say this pistol was filthy when handed to me, I mean it really and truly was!!! That it lasted 70 rounds was amazing in itself, not to mention this was rental equipment at a range!
Here is my current dilemma - I purchased my first gun last year which was a 12 guage pump shotgun. This year I really want the CX4 badly, but everyone NEEDS a good sidearm. Sssoooo, I am planning to buy BOTH!!! By the way, the CX4 and PX4 use the same mags (another reason for my reasoning). I don't know how well this is going to go over with my wife, but I won't mention it until after the purchase - that is if I can bring myself to do it!!! 8 - |
I almost went Glock, but after experiencing the Beretta Storms, I am not turning back. If you're thinking about the Storms, my advice to you is DO IT!!! You won't be sorry!!!!
I have the cx4 in 9mm and loved it so i bought it in 45. both are amazing and fun to shoot. My partner bought the Px4 and we went straight to the range. long story short, he jammed on the last shot of every clip for ten in a row and on two of them he jammed on second to last shot. Hes not to happy but they did ship it back to Beretta for him to check it out. no word yet but ill keep you all posted.
I own the CX4 and the PX4 in .40 S&W. In order for the CX4 to take the same magazine as the pistol, you must use a conversion kit. I have converted mine [just for those who are curious, it's easy to do and only costs about $40 overall].
Why have a rifle with handgun ammo capacity? Modularity. How great is it to use one type of ammo, still have accuracy up to the longest of most urban distance needs, and yet maintain the compactness, maneuverability, and interchangability of magazines that you have with these two weapons? Not to mention that the PX4 comes with a rail mounting underneath the barrell so you can swap out an attachment [laser, tac light, etc.] if necessary. Imagine how versatile that would be in a tactical urban situation! Just keep a hundred magazines of the same type, and thousands of rounds of .40, and you have range, accuracy, close quarters, and every other type of capability that any situation could possibly necessitate.
Anyways, having said all of that, my PX4 was a great pistol ... right up until about the 300-400 round mark. Every since then, it has had a problem feeding rounds. At first I thought it was the slide catch, which seemed pretty loose, so I ordered a new, low-profile replacement part. It did not help. I use the same mags and ammo in both weapons, so it's not a problem with either. I'm not sure what the deal is, but if anybody knows, please help a fellow peace officer out!
I feel some science coming about..
From Speer's website .
155 grain Gold Dot
Velocity(in feet per second)
Muzzle= 1200 50 yards= 1063 100 yards=974
Energy (in foot pounds)
Muzzle=496 50 yards=389 100 yards=326
Test Barrel Length in inches 4
Through my personal experiments with a high point carbine.
155-grain Gold Dot loads reached an average 1,400 fps. muzzle velocity ( weight x velocity x velocity divided by 45 move the decimal) equals ruffly 675foot pounds energy (179ft. lbs difference from the handgun) at the muzzle in the high point.
Comparatively,
From Federal's website
223 Rem. (5.56x45mm)
Velocity(in feet per second)
Muzzle=3325 100 yards=2839 200 = 2402
Energy (in foot pounds)
Muzzle=1227 100 yards=895 200=640
So for all intensive purposes the .40 in a carbine is comparable to a 223 at 200 yards. If you're only gaining 200 fps/179ft.lbs,(< in the .40) I'll simply just ask WHY??
Accuracy is not a viable argument to me, I've seen a dude name hickok45 shooting a factory Glock 19 out beyond 200 yards consistently (Youtube it). Considering the energy of a 9mm at that range (I have no idea). It wouldn't matter how many times you hit the BG, If all your doing is pissing him off.
The biggest reason most people hit better with a longer barrel is the sight radius. A longer sight radius makes for easier sight alignment.
So my opinion, The Beretta is just a longer barreled pistol, that is easier to shoot accurately.. Not a rifle/carbine.
Now an mp5, that's a different beast....
Just the thoughts from a buck tooth hillbilly with to many guns...Stay safe![]()
One more thing, I promise
On the modularity aspect, If your using the same ammo as in your handgun (JHP). The increase in velocity may cause premature expansion of the bullet. Or worst even, A complete deformation. Simply put, defensive type handgun rounds weren't designed to travel at the higher velocity's seen in the longer barreled counterparts..
Premature expansion or deformation greatly reduce the bullets ability to penetrate, and also affects the terminal ballistics.
Just something to consider..![]()
