    Glock 27 vs. Glock 36

I'm seriously in the market for a new gun, primary for carry off duty and as a backup. I want something easily concealable, and prefer a semi-auto vs. a revolver.

I've never owned a Glock, but have shot them quite a bit. I'm looking at the Glock 27, a sub-compact .40, and the new Glock 36, slimline .45.

Anybody out there with experience with either of these guns, both good or bad? I'm not locked into the Glock line either, so if you have a recommendation for a reasonably priced, reliable backup weapon please let me know...

Both are really great guns, just depends on if you want your gun to be very slim(G36), I'd go with the 27 though unless you really need the slim-ness of the G36

    Dan,

You speak from experience shooting these guns in different envionments and carrying each gun in plain clothes? Or from reading about them?

LOL tx.....yea glocktalk is alright if you want an extremally slanted opinion..... I mean most of them people over there would prolly screw their glock if their weiners could fit (though they may already do this).or you get the other side who totally despise Glocks so take that site for what it is worth.....I have never shot either of these pistols but just a thought....what is your primary duty gun? i would think you would like to at least keep the same cartridge for both duty carry and back up.....i know one thing that is nice about Glock is that you could carry the Glock 22 as primary and the 27 as back up..with your 22 mags being spare mags for the 27 .....where as the 36 has to have its own mags(not interchangeable with its big brother the 21)....another thing the 27 holds more bullets 9+1 vs. the 36 at 6+1.

Again I will state just for the record..I have no experience with these perticuler models...just stating what I would think...so take this wannabies opinion for what its worth:D

    Thanks for the input...

I havent had any experience with the Kahr line, I'll look into that.

My primary duty gun is the Sig 229 (.40), and I do have a boatload of .40 ammo stored up, but I kinda like the appeal of moving up a bit to the .45

IMO, if I can't hit what I'm shooting at with 6+1, then its probably time to get the hell outta dodge....

I would go with the G27

if the guns intended use is CC, the 27 is a great little pocket rocket. The sub compact 27 is a very nice little package and is very easy to carry and concel. I would recomend putting the Pierce +1 extensions on the magazines. Although, after you get use to the size of the pistol I will admit to not needing the extra grip lenght the extensions give you, but they were nice starting out (the G26/27 sive pistols are very small). the compact 36 is a step up in size, it is a bit thinner then the 27, but it is also longer, I like the 27 better.

I understand the desire to step up to .45, but I do not think the G36 is the way to go, but I am an admitedly biased owner of 5 1911 style pistols.

I agree with telecom, regarding the extensions. They're not necessary once you get used to the gun. I shoot 295/300 on the full duty course with my baby glock all the time! They are great! They take just a little getting used to, having to shoot without the pinky finger.

The Kahrs are great guns. They come a little smaller than the baby glocks. However, they do not shoot as nice. They seem a little snappier than their glock counterparts. Great, reliable weapons. If you were to pick a reliable gun on size, alone, I would go with the Kahr.

Overall, I really like the glocks. Regarding your comment about 6 rounds being enough... well, I would agree, generally. What happens, however, when you have 2 assailants? I know you could what if it forever, but muggings, 7-11 robberies, etc. often work in pairs (at least). Will you be carrying a reload? Did you consider the G33 in .357sig?

I use a Glock 17 as a primary gun and the Glock 26 as a backup. I use a grip extender on the Glock 26 to support the pinky (I didn't get the +1 to avoid any type of federal modification laws that might affect this...since the mag is not printed as law enforcement only and would hold more than the Brady Bill allows.).

I know you are not looking at the 9mm version, but i thought I'd tell you about my experiences, which have all been good. I keep the 26 in the arm pit of my shooting arm. That way, if someone is trying to get my gun, I can keep one hand on it and grab the backup with the other. The 26 holstered in a special holster designed to affix to the straps of a kevlar vest. The tension on the velcro strpas around the holster keep the gun in place, though a retention strap is available.

At the range, I shoot both guns equally well. They are nicely balanced, and the recoil is very manageable. I won the 'Top Shooter" award in my academy class after 80 hours of shooting with these guns.

The advantage of the 17's mags fitting into the 26 is indispensible. As trusty as the Glock's are, 2 officers in my department have had a serious malfunction while in a gun fight. A backup is a must, and having the spare extra ammo readily available is very comforting.

    Hope that helps.

vadep, I have owned and shot both the G27 and G36. I much preferred the G36 for off duty/concealed carry because of the slimmer profile and the heavier cartridge. A good guideline might be to pick the one that uses the same calibre ammo your duty weapon uses. One note, the G36 being slim line is the only Glock that will not accept magazines from the larger Glock 45s like the 21 and 30. The G27 will, on the other hand, accept larger capacity .40 cal mags from its bigger cousins. More to consider, but you will not go wrong with either, and both are surprisingly accurate out of the box for smaller, shorter barreled pistols.
