I was thinking of a customized one--synthetic stock, detachable mags, trigger job, etc. Of course, you'll know better than I will what would make a good LE weapon.

The decibel level can be misleading though--it's possible to have more decibels but less potential hearing damage if the sound is spread over a wider frequency range.

It still wouldn't work. It's just not a good patrol rifle. Even the "evil AK" part taken out, it still is a lousy choice.

Agreed. Why drive a Yugo when you can have a Corvette.

Inferior sights, Inferior accuracy, Inferior ballistics, plus the political stigma pretty much puts an end to the concept.

I also have to throw my vote behind the .30-30 Winchester. I have an original made in 1910 that has a LOT of character. Apparently, it spent it's life riding around in some wore out cowpunchers scabbard. They are damned good rifles......

There was an article a while back about how our Troops in Iraq were growing very found of the AK 47. The primary reason was that the gun seldom jams unlike the M-16 which has difficulty in sandy climates.

They also liked it because there was always supplies of extra ammo on just about every street corner.

It got to the point where the bosses had to create qualification programs for the AK-47's for our guys.

I've never fired one, but my PD has an M-4 which is an excellent weapon.
