Why not use AK-47 / 74's for patrol rifle?

If preference be told, I would carry a HK G-3. I think that rifle is tits! It is also in the 308 cal.

I love the G3 as well. I used one of those back in Norway when I was in the guards. Not too heavy, very durable and can be used to take measurements in a pinch (almost exactly 1m...101 cm I seem to remember)

Public perception, due to the media, is the AK is "evil". The liberals attach an evil character to the AK, as they attach human qualities to Bambi, Chip and Dale, Yogi the Bear, etc. I have never seen an AK commit a crime, or caused somone to commit a crime. However illogical the perception may be, the reality is the perception is there due to illogical people having power, and the public letting somone else do their thinking for them..

The AK doesnt have the accuracy built in as do the AR and HK. The AK is built to be cheap, to endure rough treatment, lousy ammo, and simple enough for an uneducated third world foot-soldier to maintain. Fit and finish of the AK is loose & rough compared to the western battle rifles. If an AK will put five shots into 4 inches at 100 yards, with the issue sights, call it a good day. The AR15 with issue sights can put 5 shots into an inch at 100 yards. I think of the AK like the T34 tank or Soviet aircraft; boiler plate technology & use basic materials, build more, cheaper, screw product safety concerns, and you have more to throw more at your enemy. The main requirement is that it must work under bad conditions.

I'll see your FAL and raise you an M-14. Even though I think the FAL is probably a better battle rifle overall, I've always preferred the M-14 and it's M1A siblings for the better trigger and sights.

Here Here. The M1A is a excellent rifle. The only reason I don't own one yet is the $$$. I shot my Garand in a 500 yard pop up match recently in which ammo is unlimited but time isn't. The 20 round box mag vs my 8 round enbloc wasn't fair. :p

Garands are fine too. I used to collect them and still have about a dozen of them in storage. :cool: But it pains me to admit that the AR-15 type rilfes can be made to outshoot either a Garand or an M-14 and in a lighter package to boot.

I know, I know but I love the "old school" stuff.

I guess perceived recoil varies with the individual....I've always thought that the AK in 7.62x39 was mild and pleasant in recoil. I DO agree that overpenetration might be an issue with the 7.62x39. As far as accuracy is concerned, the AR has it beat....but so does my .50 calibre Tennessee Flintlock!!!!!! I've got an AK, which I enjoy, and I would love to have an FN FAL, but I've also considered getting a CETME.

Before this year is out, I may be looking at getting an M1-Garand.....

However, I don't have an AR, and I wouldn't consider buying one either....

from all those evil guns, I knew an old Sgt in a small town
who carried a Chinese AK with the underfolding stock.
He carried it in a small black bag with 3 or 4 magazines.
He referred to it as his american express card,
he never left home without it.

I was hanging out with several old police friends in a small town here in Louisiana . I asked the question why police depts were not allowed to use AK-47 / 74 type weapons on patrol .

Politics mainly. But the AK is serverely limited in the accessory applications, modifications, and flexability of grips, stocks and features. Even if I could have an AK for a patrol rifle, I would not because of these VERY important features that are limited. One can not beat the AR. It's a perfect cartridge for urban combat. The .223 will not over-penetrate, including walls and sheetrock. The 7.62 will go through too much stuff and keep going, to be safely used in a lot of instances.

If I wanted an alternate caliber, it would be a .308, either in a bolt gun, or an M1.

10-4 on that. I Forgot about the FAL. That would certainly be an option over the M1 or bolt gun.

I have shot both the AK-74 and M-16 in full auto mode . The AK-74's (5.45X39.5) recoil is less than the M-16 (5.56 X 45 ) . I just think it would out perform a M-16 after shooting one .

How old was the M-16 you shot.

I have said many times here and elsewhere that the Winchester .30-.30 with a Scout style scope would be the perfect patrol rifle. Maybe not a good SWAT rifle but a great patrol rifle non the less. I could have ended the infamous Hollywood shootout with two shots with mine from 100 yards away.

I'm not sure about the AK (never shot one), but a customized SKS with frangible ammo would have to be a pretty wicked combo. Plus, the 7.62 makes a lower pitched "boom" instead of a harsh "pop"--much easier on the ears if you get stuck in a gun-fight without any hearing protection.
