    Need input on handgun (revolver?)

I myself have a CHL here in texas and I think I finally convinced my wife that she needs to do the same. My sister and her are gonna be taking the classes together. Have two questions...

    1. I have a Glock 23 (.40) and a Walther PPKS (380) that he could use to qualify...which of the two would you recommend for her to test with? I'm thinking maybe the PPK since it will be easier to hold but then the glock because she may need to know what a good kick feels like.

    2. Also, what kind of handgun would you suggest a female to use for protection? I'm thinking a revolver since it would seem to be easier to use, less complicated and come in somewhat smaller sizes? I had her try and pull the slide back on the Glock and Walther and she could bearly do it, with a revolver she won't have that problem, and I would think that the effort to pull back the trigger would be a lot easier than that of the slide on a semi-auto...your thoughts on both questions???

How about you take her to the range and let her rent a bunch of guns to see what she shoots best? If she finds the the revolver suits her better, shoot me a PM and I can get you a sweet deal on a S&W M10 .38 special. Thats a medium frame six shot revolver. Shoots like a ***** cat.

I didn't think about that...might just have to go ahead and take her to try a few of them...any females carrying that could share what they carry or are comfortable carrying?

The PPK also has a tendency to bite the web of the hand. I imagine that would not be a good thing for a woman you are trying to get to carry. ;) The PPK also has a fairly stiff recoil spring, and working the slide is not easy.

I also think it is not a good idea to qualify with a gun that you will be experiencing "the kick" with for the first time.

Revolvers can be tough for females to pull the trigger enough times to qualify. Semi-autos can be difficult to work the slide.

I agree with Norm. Take her to a range and let her try severla things.

my wife hates guns, but she likes my smith 640. as long as it's loaded with .38s, she's ok with it, but load it with .357 and all you'll see is that cartoon dust trail going the other way.

but then again, the wife of a guy i work with carries a colt commander daily. it really depends on personal preference.

That is very true, I traded one of my 45's for a lil PPKS 380 for the wife, and she shoots it well, but it hurts her hand she says. She prefers my duty weapon Glock 17 with Hogue grips on it. So, I let her shoot my Glock 19, and Walllaa! she found the gun she likes. Now I am out of a 45, and stuck with a little 380 until I can dump it in a trade.
As far as wheel guns go, I only have big boys that she won't even consider firing. Both Rugers, 357 Vaquero and 44 mag Super Black Hawk.

Most females do NOT like semi auto's. Most fimd them too complicated to operate, and confusing. ASK, and find out what they are comfortable with. And for god sake, let them shoot both auto/revolver at a range first, so they know what they like.

Try to get them to at LEAST qualify with the AUTO. Because if they dont, then they can't carry the small lightweight auto's that are great for CHL holders in TX ( HOT ).

It's really a case by case basis with women. Find out what they like, and go handle some guns. Do not buy them a gun as a present unless you know they like and actually want to practice with the gun.

Some women are comfortable with full frame GLock 21 .45s, some women flynch with .22 revolvers. So you gotta experiment and find out what they like and don't like. Stay away from the airweight magnums, at least at first. Most women dont like the recoil, and they wont shoot them.
