Why is ownership of newly manufactured automatic weapons prohibited to civilians?

I am curious as to why, despite the sterling record of legal auto-weapons owners for over fifty years, and despite: registration, police approval, state approval, special taxes, waiting periods, and extensive background checks, in 1986, ownership of newly manufactured automatic weapons was prohibited to civilians. I have tried learing about this subject through google searches, but the only info I find through that is that it happened and when, not why. I know there are a few NFA weapon owners here, so I figured this would be a good place to ask.

Now those that thought the NRA was pushing for no reason have learned that the NRA was right as it was just a step in the liberal anti-gun agenda.

Politics, same reason any other anti gun laws are passed.

It all comes down to being a good politican and haing some pubic issue that you can take a stand on and know that you'll vote that way and can always say

I'm against assault weapons

Remember 80% or more of the population has no idea what makes an automatic weapon and things machine gun.

I'm against criminals with assualt weapons, not the weapons themselves. I know plenty of Class III owners with the only difference between them and Class III wannabes (like myself :D ) is what Norm stated. $$$
As far as I'm concerned some people who buy fast cars, who go through no background for them, are far more dangerous than autos. Any criminal who wants a NFA weapon bad enough will just buy it illegaly anyway.

Mr. H, you can find out a lot more at subguns.com . This law was a political move from the get go. With the new leadership at the NRA, there may, repeat may, be some movement on this.
