    New Officer Needs Help

I am a new police officer and am looking to buy an off duty weapon. I know NOTHING about handguns other than what little bit they taught us in the academy. Right now all I have is my duty weapon, a Glock model 22. Although I do like it, it's too big to carry around off duty. I'm looking for something smaller. I really like the Glock model 27 but the cheapest I can find them is 550 dollars. Does anyone know of any other brand that I could look into? I want something small and reliable but maybe slightly cheaper than a Glock. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to RP! PM DC Law and get verified so you can join us in the LEO section.

I'm willing to bet you can find a G27 cheaper than that, especially a factory reconditioned or other well cared for used Glock. The nice thing about having a backup or off duty Glock the same calibre as your duty weapon is the magazines and ammo will work for both in an emergency.

Which gun to use is very personal as it depends on your hands and shooting style. If you don't want to get the G27 go to a range that rents guns and try a few different styles and see what works well in your price range.

    Chad,
I did a quick google search and found a place about 150 miles from you. The online price for a Glock 27 with fixed sites is $488.00 BUT, they say if you are a LEO, call them. I would suspect you might get a better deal....

Also.....if you know anyone that is a FFL holder, you can go to these two places and look as well....

WATERTOWN! Home of those wimpy Cyclones! J/K
My dad was stationed there in the early 80's, and I went to school at Carthage H.S. for a bit. My buddies here have already steered you right, so I have nothing except one more barb.

OMB doesn't sell to LEOs in NY State. Only NE, KS, IA, MO, CO, VA, and one or two other places in the South.

If they did sell in NY State, I would have suggested that. I have bought all mine there and know the owner's son quite well........

No biggie. A lot of people don't know that the Authorized Glock dealers have territories.

The folks at OMB are great and if I could buy all my stuff there I would. I am buying my Bushmaster from them next month and I have 6 Glocks from there as well.....

Don't worry about how much it costs. Your firearm is the one place you don't go cheap. Cut back on the Starbucks lattes and bring a sack lunch until you can afford to get the highest quality gun and leather that you can get under your departments regs.

    Thank you!

Thank you all for your help. I guess I'll just have to save up some cash over the next few paychecks and spend that hard earned money on a model 27.

$398 is the individual officer price. i'd call glock and find out who your distributor is. hell, find out where your agency bought their guns, that's probably the same place you should get yours from. our distributor not only has the police pricing, but they also have layaway plans for officers.

i'd suggest a nice 5 shot revolver in a magnum caliber though.

One other item to check with your department is their policy on off duty weapons and if they have any limits or requirements.
