Pistol range in my own basement?

Ok folks. I have been thinking about this for a while now. I have an unfinished basement and I could fit a 15yd pistol range in it. I am just wondering about the legalities of this, and the practicality.

Do I need a special license or permit, or is it totally illegal? I live in Illinois if that matters.

If a neighbor or passerby hears gunfire coming from my basement and calls 911, how would I handle that?

Are we talking big costs? I know I would have to get a ventiliation system and soundproofing and some kind of backstop.

Im sure some of you think Im crazy but I think it would be a blast.

I had that concern as well. My dept uses this at their indoor range, lead free.

    BALLISTICLEAN™

BallistiClean™ Because training should be as safe and as realistic as possible.
BallistiClean is the only non-toxic line of ammunition that’s made to the same performance standards as duty ammunition. Felt recoil, accuracy and point of impact are all comparable to service ammunition. For environmental safety, BallistiClean features a Toxic-Metal Free™ and barium free primer with a non-lead bullet that eliminates airborne lead and helps reduce barrel fouling. Range operators have no hazardous waste disposal problems and it meets or exceeds all OSHA and EPA standards. BallistiClean is available in our jacketed, stranded zinc core bullet– designed to break up on hard targets–and in our Close Quarter Training (CQT) round. CQT bullets breakup immediately upon contact with metal targets, significantly reducing ricochet and backsplash danger. A copper-plated primer and an “NT” (non-toxic) head stamp identify BallistiClean as a training round at a glance, eliminating confusion with duty rounds.

Joe Nava, up in Fairbanks has a range in his basement. It's pretty cute. He gives firearms lessons to the public out of his house. He'll know about costs and how to set it up. I found his email and phone number online.

Joe Nava, at yhecdirector@aimcomm.org, or phone (907) 479-2340.

There is actually a whole bunch of regulations about building a range including the kind of trap required, the ability to clean it, ventilation, sound proofing etc. You really need to look into this before doing it. And, if you live in a city it is unlikely that they will even allow it. Most places, no matter how well you build it, will freak out if they hear shooting and house in the same sentance. If you live out a ways then you could possibly do it. My father just built a shop and is putting in a range and it is the biggest headache just to get the paperwork and approvals let alone all the regulations on how it has to be built...Good luck

Good luck on your homeowners insurance also. Most companies probably won't like that at all. If you're inspected....

Right on the money. Lead is some NASTY stuff, and the cash outlay to control it is going to be prohibitive. :(

Hey guys, what sort of ventilation systems are usually used to control the lead? The indoor range I go to with my brother doesn't, well, seem that well ventilated. There's no air conditioning and they use fans to keep it cool, but I assume there's a separate system for cycling the air?

Ranges must have a full air turnover ever (X) minutes. The air generally enters behind the shooters and is exhausted down range. They must have hepa filters to remove any lead dust and contaminates before they recycle the air in the range our exhaust it.

The HVAC costs are the most expensive part of a range..

The range where I teach has 3 systems. 2 are part of a larger system.

    1. Large fans above the shooting lanes bring in fresh, untreated outside air and push it downrange.

    2. Large fans near the backstop pull air from the range and discard it to the outside.

    3. Seperate Heat/AC.

While we're on the subject, I got a chance to check out the NRA HQ range a month or two ago. It's awesome.

Thanks for all of the replies. It is a no go in my municipality. Good luck to anyone that tries to put a range in their house.

I know of one guy that installed a range in his basement. He dug a trench out into the backyard, cut a hole in the foundation, installed large diameter concrete pipe that went out to a concrete "vault" where the trap was installed and then he soundproofed the "bench end" in the basement.
He built a garden shed over the "vault to disguise it, hide the exhaust fan and the clean out access.
No one knew it was there.
