8mm Mauser is about the cheapest ammo out there at the moment. 80$ for 1200 rounds. It will also knock you on your butt.:D

After having collected and shot several of the military surplus rifles, I have to agree with the sks carbine for someone wanting a semi-automatic as inexpensive, reliable and lots of fun to shoot.
For a bolt-action, I recommend the mosin-nagant M38 or M44 carbine as dependable, robust with reputation of stiff recoil.
Ammo is very available and affordable at gun shows or mail order . Just get a copy of shotgun news for sources.
An sks can be had from $100-300 depending on "collectability". The mosin-nagants can be gotten for $50-60 if you shop around.
Both are worthy hunting rifles to boot.
I was looking at ammo at my local sporting goods store and the cheapest rifle ammo I saw was Russian 7.62 x 39mm. It was$8.99 for a box of 20. I didn't see any 8mm ammo anywhere and they had a good supply of ammo. I'll keep checking around as I don't want to buy an rifle that I can't afford to shoot![]()

RE ammo. $7.99 for 20 rds of 762x39?? Does that shop have the same dusty high-priced stuff year after year? You can order ammo off the web and get to about 10 cents per round, plus shipping. Gun shows will have vendors for about the same, perhaps a bit more to recover their shipping costs. 8mm is available surplus from Turkey circa 1940's, eastern Europe circa 1980's-90's. 762x39 and 762x54 from numerous sources of 60's to recent dates, 762x51 NATO or 308 from Europe, Israel or UK commonwealth, ditto for 223 or 5.56 NATO.....usual corrrosive concerns apply if east-bloc or 3rd world origin.
There are many surplus outlets, check their proximity to you, due to freight costs. A few websites below. Also check the online yellow pages or web search for military surplus guns and ammo stores in your area Shipping to your door isn't cheap, so the larger your order, the "per box" cost decreases.
