    Artesia, New Mexico (FLETC)?

I am currently in the application process for the USSS-UD and have been told that if hired, I may end up at the FLETC in Artesia, New Mexico. Does anyone have any experience with this facility?

    Thanks in advance.

Friend of mine went to a course there just six months ago. Siad it was new and pretty nice. A lot of BIA folks training there... weather is pretty mild and less humid than Glenco. It would be my choice ;-). Thing is, not real close to any MAJOR cities!

It has been around for more than 20 years. It was once a very low profile school where only undercover DEA, Customs and similar types went. Back then there weren't even towns around and people had to drive for miles to find a six pack or non issued food. Sometime around 83 or 85 it formally entered the FLETC system, grew enormously and began to take in non UC types.

man........that place sucks! good thing is the food is not bad compared to other academies i went to and army chow. i went through an advance training there in 6/02 to 8/02 for DOT/FAA and all i remember was the heat. dry desert heat. we had room service and never had to make or clean our rooms or make our beds. one man rooms with shared bathrooms. cable tv and air condtionnig in all the rooms in the new barracks. i think the old ones too across from the chow hall. a central FREE laundry facility and a swimming pool at the old barracks. other than that, BIA and border patrol do their training there. and u might see three 727s there next to the ranges where we trained on. artesia sucks. nothing there but the 1940's movie theater and a few decent sport bars.

Let me add to the dicussion

FLETC-Artesia is a good place to train. I know alot of folks comment on the isolation of the facility (nothing to do, this place sucks) but remember you are there to train, not VACATION. If you are looking for a resort facility with all of the trappings, then ARTESIA is NOT for YOU.

The closest place to shop and get NON-FLETC food is Roswell, 43 miles to the north. If BIG CITY action is your cup of TEA, El Paso, Texas is three hours south, Albuquerque, NM is 3.5 hours North. Roswell, NM has all of the comforts you will need.

"looking for a resort facility with all of the trappings"

that would be Charleston, SC, for Border Patrol Academy instructors, from what i've been told. the people there rent out very nice beach houses for the max $ that agents can claim on their travel vouchers. i have yet to talk to an agent who was ready to come back after being detailed as an instructor.

also, there is something to be said for having something to do off-hours. i would never have survived 20 weeks of academy training if i had not been able to get away occasionally.
