    What does FLEOA really do?

I was curious on what FLEOA actually does for an 1811? I know we do not have a union and never had to use FLEOA before. I was involved in an off duty incident in my personal vehicle that could result in some sort of suspension. Would FLEOA advocate for me in such a situation?

To get any benefits from FLEOA, you need to be a member prior to the incident in question. FLEOA would provide general legal advise about the admin process against you, but nothing else. If you had professional liability insurance then they would actually represent you during the admin process. That is why you pay $120 a year and the agency pays $120 a year. Getting a lawyer is going to cost a hell of a lot more than $120, especially one with experience in federal government admin process for LEO's.

Every time somebody says they don't need PLI or FLEOA, I chuckle. At $85 for FLEOA and $120 for PLI, that is $200 a year. In a 20 years, that is $4,000. One incident, at fault or not, and a lawyer shows up on your behalf, and you just made money! And any cop doing their job is eventually going to end up stepping into a problem in 20 years.

FLEOA is worth as much as you put in. The major benefits:

    1) If you are involved in police action, they will represent you from incident until DOJ decides if you will be scoped and provides a DOJ attorney.

    2) Some legal rep in on-duty matters and a consult on off-duty.

    3) Each agency has a FLEOA re who can take issues back to FLEOA. If some policy is BS or rules are a problem, FLEO usually meets with the head of the agency and resolves it on behalf of the members.

    4) They lobby on the hill for LOE's.

    5) Bunch of discounts, a scholarship, etc....

    6) A place where you can "give back" to the community. My chapter does numerous fundraisers and community events like raisng money for the Polar Bear Challenge (and doing it or supporting those who do by holding their towels), National Missing and Exploited Child ID day, PLane Pull, Towers Run, etc....

    7) Multiple evenst each year where you can get together with other agents in your area, have dinner and a beer and make friends. Great tool when you need help at Friday, 7 pm, andcall the guy/gal you met at FLEO two weeks agao for help.

    8) In NJ, FLEO is also a PBA chapter, which if you are from the area, means a bunch of other benefits.

From what I read recently if your agency takes any adverse action against you, FLEOA will represent you in front of your agency and or MSPB. Is that true?

Only if you paid your dues and were a member BEFORE the incident.

Someone asked a similar question in another LE forum. I think the responses (including PMs) that poster received were spot on.
