Sheesh, looks like they are leaning heavy towards people with Master's or people that are already POs/Agents. That questionnaire is depressing to answer to say the least.
There are some outstanding DSS guys out there. However, most that I know who have had prior LE are trying to get out. It's a very unique niche in the LE field, that is for sure.

A guy I knew on my department quit and went with DSS. After about two years, he resigned DSS, reapplied with us and came back. To be honest, I don't know what his dissatisfaction was with the job, I wasn't around him much after he returned. He had some interesting "war stories", but I never heard him talk about why he left DSS.

Well, their agents do live and work in some of the worst sh!t holes this planet has to offer. Don't get me wrong, we have embassies and consulates in some really nice areas too, but particularly as a new agent you can count on going somewhere in the Middle East/Northern Africa vice the Swiss Alps.
That is a well done recruitment video, though.

My assumption was that he quit because of the work locations and/or constant travel, but that was just a guess. That would be enough for me to hang it up so I guess that's why I leaped to that conclusion.

I know a lot of former DSS Agents, if that means anything.
My CITP class was pretty much half ICE and half DSS. I remember the day that the DSS guy came into class to inform his trainees that they would all be in Baghdad very soon. He was a total ****. But, that's the job. Expect to be where most people don’t want to be.

I saw a movie where deputy U.S. Marshals chased down the rogue DSS agent with the help of another DSS agent who was the real bad guy. He shot another deputy U.S. Marshal and blamed the rogue DSS. The U.S. Marshals must be a small service because that team of 8 or so traveled all over without any support or help from other deputy U.S. Marshals. It was a sequel to a movie about some Fugitive being framed by a one-armed man being chased by deputy U.S. Marshals. The movie names are on the tip of my tongue....
I think Inspector Switch says this every other day or so: "search every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse in that area."
I'm impressed, you even got my title right! LOL
Well, like Manhunters, it is all for show. The cool thing has less to do with our ability to ignore borders than the ease with which we can put a call out and make something happen NOW anywhere in the country.
FWIW, we may travel on a case when necessary, but it is rare. In 15 years, I had only 1 case that was complicated enough to warrant ME being on the scene to do interviews and look for the guy in another region. Usually, I can brief another DUSM and feel confident that it will be done well enough.
Back on topic, I met only a few DSS guys in Iraq. They were busy... and so was I for that matter. Now, in Afghanistan, I had the opportunity to hang out with a few on a more regular basis. They were all pretty dialed-in guys/gals. The girl that I new best was not prior-LE. She was happy with the gig and had little complaints. The 2 prior-LE guys that I knew were miserable. The one was prior NYPD and after 4 years on with DSS, he kept talking about going back to the NYPD to be a "real cop" again. The political side of the DSS is very unique, to say the least.

I bet it is....
I remember Nixon came to town when I was a young cop and I had some goofy job occupying a space. Some long haired hippy freak tried to get past a couple of USSS guys as Nixon was coming out of a building. They flatten that kid and did things to him that would have gotten me fired even back then. I thought it must be cool to have to only answer to the guy who's life you're protecting.....![]()

Yeah, but you are more likely to have the support of the POTUS and he really has no one to answer to. Now, when you do that for an Ambassador or any other 1st-tier protectee, you may now enjoy such cart-blanche support. Afterall, that protectee has people they answer to and they are also there to placate the leaders in the country in which you are stationed/traveling. Then there are the mandatory embassy parties... pain in the arse!

I've heard the same from multiple sources (former DS and current). I guess it's to be expected considering who they work for. DS may be a LE/security outfit, but Dept of State is and always has been the cabinet that wants to give the world a group hug, and as a former local/state cop that may be a rough pill to swallow.

Doing executive protection isn't really doing LE, IMO. To me, LE is solving cases, not being a body guard. I had a little executive protection training years ago and moonlighted as a body guard for visiting celebrities for a few years. It was kinda fun and nice distraction, but I couldn't see wanting to do that day in and day out. At least with what I did, if the significant person was a jerk, it was temporary and I could pass if they ever came back to town. With DSS, you have no choice.
