    Acquiring additional language skills.

Hey, I've been reading through all the threads pertaining to language testing/most desirable skils/ etc

However like anything, language skills are a trend that changes. I've been wondering if anyone would like to enlighten me on any recent changes/departmental changes in their field of work?

I'm currently employed with the great city of Houston and we are going through some budget issues, with that said there is a real possibility that the city will lay off numerous jailers, leaving those spots to be filled with patrol officers. So in the event that I am forced out of patrol and into the jail for 1.5 years I'm looking at the real possibility of being able to return to school for an additional degree.

Would anyone like to chime in on what they would do with such an opportunity? HPD will pay for the majority of my education, 100% if it's a law degree.

I have an undergrad in Finance, but I've never worked in that field leaving it relatively meaningless.

hi! I'm obviously not a LEO but I would say if HPD is willingly to pay 100% for a law degree then shoot for that, not sure what degrees are available out there but any career in law will probably only benefit you..could you not somehow fit your financial degree in with a law degree dealing with fraud ?? ( not sure if even a degree exist such as this) but it came to my mind , If my company was willingly to pay 100% I would be all over that..I'm currently paying out of pocket for all of my classes and it stinks..good luck.

That's odd that the city has enough money to still pay for college tution (whether most or all of it) if they're looking at doing layoffs. I'd double check the availability of tuition assistance as that may have changed with the budget being what it is.

A degree in finance isn't meaningless, some degrees are more in demand than others. Accounting and computer science are in high demand, just look at job sites and you'll see these are always jobs that are hiring. If the city is willing to pay the full tuition for a law degree and that interests you, go for it, but I'd get it in writing that the tuition is 100% covered, the average for total tution for a JD is around $100k... that's a lot of student loan debt if it's out your own of pocket.
