    Bureau of Prisons

I recently applied to be a C.O. for the B.O.P.
Anyone have any idea how their physical fitness training goes in Glynco?
When I started the D.O.C. academy in Wisconsin, they had us running laps, doing push ups and situps every day, to train for our testing.
Do the feds do the same thing? or is it just 'come on in-testing starts now'?

When you get to Glynco, everyone stresses the BOP Physical Assessment Test. If memory serves me correctly, the P.A.T. is given during the second week of the academy. Prior to that you P.T. everyday and sweat the test. Then test day comes and you wonder why anyone would be hesitant to not do the test twice. After the Physical Assessment Test day we never did P.T. again during the BOP academy. Just be in reasonable shape for the test. However, if no one has informed you, get in real good shape for your CO career. Some of those guys/gals in the institutions are huuuge. At Terminal Island (TCI) the inmates maintain an outside weight lifting area that would put most small gyms to shame.

so like, what are the numbers on the tests? like what time do you need to run (I'm guessing its a mile and a half)? How many push ups/sit ups? etc.?

    LOL

From the candidates I saw during my tours at FLETC, I would have to agree with rambo. That is not to say that there are not squared away people at their academy or on the job, but there are a lot that are far from being in decent shape!

I went to Glynco in February 2001. We did not PT there at Glynco. We did do the test, but can't tell you when we did it. It was within the first 2 weeks though. Trust me, if they hire you, you can pass the test. You will have to have some major health problems, not to pass. I specifically remember doing the run around a track, the dummy drag, ladder climb (to retrieve a knife above your head), and a little obstacle course setup like a jail (you run around some things, under a table, open a cell go inside, come back out, close the cell and back through some obstacles in a certain time).

I don't like running and I was concerned with the run before going there a little. But it was a breeze to me and I was in the fastest 10% of the class. The run is only a 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile. I can tell you that at the prison I worked at, that it was a much longer run from the chow hall to the dorms, and then if they were second story that was worse. If you are already hired and in training there at the prison, take a look at some of the CO's there. I'm sure you will see some hat will make you wonder how they passed the PAT. They did and so can you.
