Stand by to stand by. Nothing in the fed moves quickly.
Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

    "Wrong door, buddy!"

Bureau of Indian Affairs - 0083 Applicant Info

It depends on which vacancy announcement you applied for. The selections appear to have been made from the first announcement that closed on Dec. 31st. I was called by HR in late January, offered a job, and accepted the position in Fort Yates, ND at the Standing Rock Reservation. HR notified me that the entire process should take between 6 and 8 weeks. I've read that BIA is just now getting to the selections they will make off the second announcement so if you were selected, should be hearing from them soon.

A packet arrived in mid February including the following forms which had to be filled out and sent back before February 26th:

SF-86 - Start gathering info now, if you've never filled one out. You will need the following working back 10 years (BIA does an SSBI), every employer, residence (with a person who knew you up to 3 years ago), all credit accounts good/bad/indifferent, any clearances previous or current, all immediate family members living or dead, etc....you get the picture. You can find the form at the opm website and fill it out online and print it. Your wrist will thank you.

OF 306 - Declaration for Federal Employment. This is an easy form to complete.

OPM Physical Examination form - This must be completed by a practitioner with a recommendation for hire/no hire. The form will be looked over by the BIA medical officers, and approved or denied.

GSA Driver's License form - Pretty basic information.

Credit Bureau release - I think there were 3 of these, all different, for whatever reason.

Appendix J (they left this out of everyone's packets) Certifies you haven't committed any crimes against children.

Domestic Violence certification - Certifies that you have never been convicted of a crime of domestic violence.

Release of Information forms - 1 or 2 of these.

Signed them all and filled out the SF-86, had the package back within 1 day.

Called by HR and scheduled for a drug test on March 10th

Contacted by BIA security lady on March 12th to clarify a few things on the SF-86 and told she is sending it to OPM immediately. After OPM investigators are finished, they will send what the have back to her and she will pass or fail you. I was told it should be finished sometime around the May 1st.

Main HR lady is then supposed to contact me and work out my selection date and all the other transition details.

    Good luck!

I sent everything back middle of feb haven't heard anything back yet do you think that means I wasn't selected? how many people generally apply for these positions? what do they typically look for when they are selecting people?

    Jdomino,
If it was the SF-86 etc. background packet you're referring to, you should get a call after it is sent to the BIA security office and they review it. You've got the job if they offered it to you over the phone. You just have to pass every step now in the hiring process. You should be getting a call soon from security who will clarify anything that needs clarification on your SF-86 and then they will send your stuff out to OPM for the (SSBI) single scope background investigation which will take 6-8 weeks. The jobs is yours to lose now if you fail the background, drug test, or medical. What reservation/duty station were you offered?

Idk how many apply but it sounds like a pretty good gig with all the hiring perks and fed benefits. It sounds like they are looking for people with law enforcement experience. Most of the others guys selected on officer.com are already working federal police jobs (0083) and are military veterans. I have 9+ years experience as a city police officer in WV but no military exp. I've been reading that in the past, the BIA tried to fill all the positions with Natives but now are in desperate need of qualified candidates and are selecting non-natives to fill the positions.

sorry for the misunderstanding I applied for a police officer position with the bia and was emailed all the paper work to fill out, I faxed it all back to the national native american law enforcement association and then they told me they forwarded it all to the bia department of interior for review so now im just waiting. I followed up with a phone call the other day and I was told if Im selected I will get a call. Are my chances not loookin good?

Sorry I misunderstood you. I'm not sure. Are you Native American and which announcement did you apply under? The one that ended Dec 31 or the announcement after that one? If you're Native, I'd say you have a good shot since the BIA has Native hiring preference (see below). If not, I've heard that those who applied under the 2nd announcement will be contacted soon and/or are being contacted now.

"INDIAN PREFERENCE: Preference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (Title 25, USC, Section 472). Verification Form BIA-4432 must be submitted with the application if claiming Indian Preference. Indian preference eligibles that are not currently employed in the Federal service will be appointed under the Excepted Service Appointment Authority Schedule A, 213.3112(A)(7). Consideration will be given to Non-Indian applicants (Status or Reinstatement eligibles) in the absence of a qualified Indian Preference eligible."

One thread on this is enough. I'll merge them so we don't have useless threads.

I am interested in obtaining more information regarding BIA. I am currently a 0083 in California, and might be transferring to SD for BIA. I want to know about what type of duty weapons they use, vehicles, uniforms and how is it working there. Any feedback would help.
