    USFS LEOs

There are a few USFS LEO announcements on USAJobs right now, series 1801.

I know that many NPS LE Rangers aren't considered LEOs outside their parks (the Type II commissions IIRC), but they are series 0025.

I know that BLM LE Rangers are series 1801 and generally considered similar to more traditional LEOs.

Where would 1801 series USFS LEOs fall? Full-time, LEOSA covered, etc, etc?

Well, I applied for three USFS LEO positions open, under both the public and status announcements. So well see what happens.

No fair! Those are the ones I was looking at!

I find it interesting that Helena, MT is only open for status candidates... I wonder what that means.

Oh I didn't put in for MT. I put in for the ones in OR. Open for Status Candidates means that you have to already or previously been employed by the federal govt or veterans status. Did you put in for any?

I know that, what I mean is I wonder why they ONLY have a status announcement and not a general "public" announcement as well?

Im not sure. Maybe they only want status candidates or they are making it someone already in USFS with a less desirable place can can put in for it to transfer. Just a guess. Tanksoldier, did you put in for any of the positions?

Well, my father was a NPS Protection Ranger for most of my teenage years. I spent most of those summers living at various national parks. During that time I had a pretty good opportunity to see both the NPS and USFS and see the differences in attitude between the two services. I think I'd fit in as a USFS LEO better.

That said, this was almost 20 years ago so if there is any advice you'd ;ike to give a potential recruit: hiring, what the job is "really" all about, your personal job satisfaction, etc.

Anything you'd like to share, really.

Hey, Well, I would like to know what are your likes/dislikes about being a USFS LEO. How hard is it to get into the USFS? HOw the hiring process. Ive spoken by email to one of the patrol cpts in an area that I applied for and he gave me a timeline of how things go. Well, just any info would be great. Thanks.

I would like to know what are your likes/dislikes about being a USFS LEO....

-- I would have to say I enjoy the work schedule, the freedom, I also have a Captain that is always behind me 100% because he trust me doing my job with professionalism. The pay is really good. On top of the AOU we get the overtime to do those OPS are great. I have a take home vehicle.
When it gets hot thats where I go. I enjoy being the first to start an investigation and I am okay with helping the Special Agents make the cases..
There are dislikes about the job, but the likes far out way the dislikes, so I would rather tell you about the likes and you can make you own decision.

How hard is it to get into the USFS?

---I don t really know how hard it would be to get in. I guessing its just as hard as in other Law Enforcement job. Just do what you have done as far as make contacts and call some officer's at the Forest you are looking at. I have had a couple of guys call me. I am very happy to give out info.

I hope this helps and if you would like to talk more let me know. Good Luck guys..

Thanks for the insight. Yea, I hear that there's a lot of people with good qualifications who apply for USFS LEO positions, so I am just hoping my qualifications get me an interview cause thats were I plan to sell myself. So I hope it works out, if not I just keep trying. It is a really great career and one I would love to be a part of.

I also applied for a few positions as a USFS LEO. I'm currently employed as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer, but would love work for the USFS. They seem to be very professional and I've never heard any negativity about the agency. Sounds like a good career.

Pretty much every announcement that has opened up in the last month or so. NE, OR, VA, MT & FL. The Nebraska announcement closed in October, and they just notified me a couple weeks ago that I was referred to the hiring official. Seems pretty slow, but its probably due to the new fiscal year, plus it is the federal gov't. Anyway, there are quite a few announcements open right now so I guess we'll see.

    How about you?
