Paygrade Progression Question

Im being picked up as an 1811 and being brought onboard as a GL9 Step 2. After a year, do I become an 11/1? What happens after that? This confuses me when you come in at a paygrade between the bands. Thanks.

It all depends on your agency's progression to journeyman and, not knowing the specific job you are talking about, it is hard to say. There certainly isn't enough info in your post to say for sure.

Now, with that said, assuming your agency does progress to 11 after a year of being a 9-1, you will likely go to 11-1. If you were a 9-2 or 9-3, you may make it to 11-2.

Regarding your question, I had a classmate hired at GL-9 step 2, and went to 11 step 2 at his anniversary date, but not sure if that was just our agency since we're excepted service.

Can't speak for any agency but mine, but here you have to go 3 steps at GS-12 before getting GS-13. So, if hired at GS-9, one would make journeyman 13 within 5 years (i.e. GS-9 -> GS-11 -> GS-12,1 -> GS-12,2 -> GS-12,3 -> GS-13). Not sure if this is something unique to my agency, or more mainstream across the 1811 board.

It is agency specific, my agency you are hired as 10/1 then 11/1 then 12/1 then 12/2 then 13.

Only time you start at a 9 is if you have no work experience (i.e. college graduate).

That is why my agency is better then your Ros...

Which office? We just had a guy here at my station turn down a spot with ICE OI at the Laredo office.

GL-5 > 6 Months later goto GL-7 > 1 year later go to GL-9 > 1 year later go to GS-11 > Wait several years and hope you are selected for GS-12.

Of course we recently got the across the board upgrade to journeyman GS-12 but no word yet if 1st line supervisors will go up to GS-13's.

What a mess that's going to be if the service leaves the journeyman & 1st line supervisor at GS-12's. They won't get anyone to put in a for a supervisor position.

I was told from 4th to 5th is 2 years and same for 5th to 6th and 6th to 7th. After that it's 3 years in between step increases.

Laredo is one of the offers I received....no thanks. I wasnt given much better choices though. I chose the valley. Where is your boy stationed that turned down the Laredo offer? Apparently, it's an entirely SWB class.

step 1 to 2 = 1 year
step 2 to 3 = 1 year
step 3 to 4 = 1 year
step 4 to 5 = 2 years
step 5 to 6 = 2 years
step 6 to 7 = 2 years
step 7 to 8 = 3 years
step 8 to 9 = 3 years
step 9 to 10 = 3 years

Thus my chart is correct. For example on January 15, 2016 he he gets promoted to 13-4. He remains that until January 15, 2018, when he goes to a 13-5.

Did not know that many or your agency's make you progres in GS-12 until to get your 13. I can't speak for the many, but the OIG agencies do not do this. It progresses as the chart shows.
