Family Background - Will it make a difference?

    Hello,

I am currently in college and I am interested in getting into a government related job.

Now, for instance...say I would be interested in pursuing a job with the FBI. Would my family's background history hurt me?

My family isn't full of hard-core criminals, the crimes are:
    1. My father has been in the county jail three times. Once for driving while under the influence, twice for being drunk at home and another family member called the police. That last offense was about 7 years ago.

    2. My brother has been in a Juvenile Detention facility once for shooting a gun on the family's property, and once in KidsPeace for threatening to commit suicide. That last happened about 9 years ago.

Also, one additional question if I may... for computer networking/IT, what government jobs are the most popular?

    Thanks so much!

    Happy Veterans day!

Your family history shouldn't make a difference.

As far as IT jobs every government agency has IT people.

Thank you very much for your reply BP348, I am very glad to hear that!

I also have another question if you don't mind (or anyone else reading this). I am planning to get a B.S. and CCNA and CCNP certified (Cisco certifications for networking). Now, after the four years, I will apply to certain federal level jobs, however from what I have see on this forum is that work experience of at least 2 years is recommended.

My question is...what sort of place should I work for that revolves around Computer IT/networking? Is there a job that the FBI would look at more positively over another job? It probably doesn't matter, but I just want to make sure.

Any replies would be fantastic, and thanks again for your reply BP348.

You'll have to be more specific about what job you're looking at, as the FBI (or any federal agency) have dozens of positions with different job descriptions. If you want to be an agent, the FBI gives pretty clear information on what they require to use your IT skills to qualify (working one given IT job over another really doesn't do anything, so long as you meet the requirements they set forth for the position): Click Here

If you want to work IT in the support staff positions, again, the FBI gives pretty detailed information for that too: Click Here
