Just wondering, but I know the FBI has certain ways to get hired, such as physical science/engineering and law. Would it improve chances if one receives a JD and has a bachelors in science or engineering since they could fall into two categories? Or is it more based upon what type of work you were involved in prior to applying to the FBI?

There's only one member on this site I'm aware of that works for FBI, wolfman. You can ask him, and he may be able to provide more insight, but most of the members of this site likely have no clue about FBI hiring demands. You might try asking your question on 911jobforums.com.

Now, if you're interested in other law enforcement agencies, federal, state or local, this site has plenty of representation. Just not much for FBI.

    most-wanted,

It seems that everyone that posts this topic wants that magic bullet answer, i.e. what will make a guarantee in to the bureau. I'll tell you this, hiring demands for the bureau change every year just as crime does. For example, yes, the bureau has shifted its direction into the counterterrorism focus as of recent years. But lately a lot of that effort is being redirected to fraud. Some years they may want people with finance and computer backgrounds, other years military. For one, language is definitely one key skill to boost your application. Experience with the military or law enforcement as well. If you want to keep your science focus, go join the army and branch out into it. Key thing is, do what your passion is first and foremost. Too many people go out and experience things that they don't necessarily enjoy just for the sake of reaching their version of the promise land (1811). Trust me, you won't be kicking down doors with jack bauer or ninjutsu-ing perps with chuck norris on a daily basis (unless you're switchback). Furthermore, the advice you've been given has been excellent. Make sure you understand the mission of the bureau. I know plenty of agents that came on and left because it just wasn't for them. A lot depends on what squad you're assigned to after you complete your probation. I know some high speed Marine Corps killers that were assigned to counterintelligence and wanna stab themselves in the eye. Other squads sit on surveillance for hours on end just for one moment. Very few get to actually do the sexy mission everyone pictures in their head. Like I said, stay with your passion first. Doing something you love is the only guarantee for success. At the end of the road if you make it into the bureau, then great on you. I hope you enjoy it. If not, you'll at least have something to fall back on.

Yeah, I guess I was really just trying to look for that set path to becoming an 1811. When I first read what it took, my head started spinning because the website's requirements were so broad. I think I'm just going to finish school first and then decide what step I'll take next.

Also, I've read through about relocations and such, but is Los Angeles considered an undesirable location?

Depends. If you grew up in LA and have family there, probably not. If you're from another part of the country and are accustomed to a much less expensive cost of living, probably so.
