    NCIS FY 2010 FLETC Classes

Hey folks, first time poster here who just found this site, it has some great stuff. I got some intel on the FY 2010 classes for NCIS and it's not good news. Because of budgets, they are probably only going to have 2 classes with around 24 per class. I don't know how deep the hiring pool is right now either which will also come into play. I just took my drug test today and have my medical next week, my BI should be finished next week. My timeline is:

    -Applied: Nov 2008
    -Panel: June 2009
    -Background: Oct 2009
    -Medical/Urinalysis: Oct 2009

I have a good federal job as an analyst right now, but I interned with NCIS in 2004 and have been trying to get in ever since, it's a great place. Good luck to all those out there in the process. If anyone knows how the whole salary matching thing works for current federal employees coming to NCIS, could you pm me?

Very good intel received today is that NCIS will likely hire less than fifty (50) agents for FY 2010. If you're in the hiring pool, good luck.

    Anyone know:

    1. When these classes will be? I heard rumor that one could be as early as February 2010.

    2. How many people are in the pool right now?

    3. Any particulars on what they are looking for skillset wise this year?

I was told by an agent there would most likely not be any classes for the rest of 2009, they didn't have firm dates on the classes for 2010. I have no idea how many are in the pool right now (that wold be some good info if we could get it), and I don't know on skillsets. Sorry, that probably didn't help you very much.

If I knew any of that, I would have posted it. Most of that info is only known to HQ types and recruiters, and I'm just a regular Joe in the field.

No worries. Thanks for the other info though! Too bad there aren't more available for this year. Do you know by chance how far out from a class they usually start making offers?

Depends, sometimes weeks, sometimes months. I was notified in late Aug and my start date was in early Oct. I knew a few others that had longer notice, and some that had a bit shorter.

The recent news that I've heard is that there may not be a class for 2010 until the beginning of next summer. While the FLETC classes may not start until then, some may be hired to work in their field office earlier than normal before they report to FLETC. As far as who's getting plucked from the pool, I have been told critical language needs is very important to NCIS right now. So if you're in the pool and you know Chinese, Farsi, Arabic, etc, you may have reason to be excited.

Hello everyone. If there are no classes until summer that would be unfortunate but I would enjoy gaining experience at the FO before attending FLETC. I was wondering how long after the panel can you expect to hear if you made it to the background investigation portion of the process? All I have heard is if you get rejected you will get a letter within 2-3 weeks. Thanks.

I can only speak for myself, but I was told right after my panel they were passing me, but HQ would make the final decision. I was also told they seldom go against the panel's recommendation, but it does happen. About three months later, I got an email from NCIS HQ saying they needed me to sign some forms to start my background, so I knew it was starting. Once the ball got rolling with the background, they hit it pretty hard. I've lived in a ton of different places and I had friends calling me from all over saying a NCIS agent just showed up at their work or home. Not to hijack the thread or anything but what has been your experience with NCIS speaking to your current employer? The agent doing my background is showing up at my work tomorrow while I'm there to speak to my boss and any co-workers of her choosing. So much for keeping this under the radar. After tomorrow I'll be known as the "dead man walking."

Thanks voltage. After my panel they said that they will be sending my packet along with their notes and recommendation to HQ in DC. They said HQ will make the final decision to move me on to the backgorund or if the process should end. They also mentioned the ambiguity of the process in that they are not sure how long it might take to get an offer, and more so now that they are hiring fewer agents this year. Good luck on your work situation. If I were you, I would sit down with my boss today and discuss the matter and assure them that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, you are committed to your current job and would only leave for this rare opportunity. Something to that effect. If you are upfront and honest with them I do not see them holding this against you.

Good advice undersiege, my immediate boss is actually super cool about the whole thing and has flat out told me, "you need to go to NCIS, you will be miserable here if you pass this up." I just don't want any higher up brass knowing yet, at least not until I have a FLETC date, which could be a long time coming. What's funny is that before they sent my packet to HQ after my panel, the same agent doing my background now asked if it was ok to talk to my boss before they sent my packet forward. They spoke for a while and have actually have become friends (all my associates who have dealt with NCIS during the background have been very impressed with the agents who interviewed them). So anyway, my boss has known for a while about NCIS, I don't know if anyone else had their boss contacted right after the panel. I literally passed the panel on a wednesday and NCIS had a nice long chat two days later with my boss.

    Undersiege,
My experience was from my panel to background start was about one month (once they found my packet that is...PM me if you want the long story ). I have heard folks taking as long as three.

    Voltage,

On the note with the BI, the NCIS agents who did my background let my employer know they were there for my application. Luckily, I was pretty open with my employer so this was not a big deal for me.

The agents doing my BI were awesome! One actually spent some time actually talking with me on the phone doing some early mentorship, and even gave me their cell to call if I ever had any questions. I was impressed! I hope you have a similar experience and will see you in the pool. I have an extra set of swimmies if you need some

Voltage, good move on having your boss in the loop. I am glad to hear both you and nfury have had great experiences throughout the BI process. I have noticed the NCIS have been a very personable and close knit group. Hopefully I find out about my BI starting sooner than later .
