Just wanted to update everyone on some info. Took my medical and passed today Now I just have to enter the black hole of waiting around trying not to remember that you have now completed all the steps to landing your dream job...easier said than done. Anyway, the important news is that the agent running my app confirmed with me today that June 2010 is the first FLETC class and depending on budget, some may be hired earlier to do office-type work until they leave for FLETC. She mentioned those with language and cyber skills are important to NCIS, which should help you in the pool ranking. Now, all this is from someone in the field and not HQ, so things could change for better/worse in a hurry, but just wanted everyone to know what I found out. Also, she is not aware of when the next hiring board is going to be.

Oh great! South Georgia in June. Bring your bug spray! Hope you guys like the heat and humidity. Should be fun.
Now I wonder on how soon those calls will go out for bringing folks into FOs.

Yeah, it will be hot and humid with mosquitos trying to carry off anyone under 150lbs. But if you can do well under those conditions than you will handle anything else with ease. I also wonder how soon before training people might get an offer to start at their FO. I would like gaining the experience at the FO and establishing myself before leaving for training.

Two questions. What critical languages is NCIS looking for? Also how do you qualify as having a language for NCIS? DLPT?

From what I have heard, the usual suspects for languages; chinese, arabic, spanish, etc... From what I hear they ask you detailed questions about your knowledge of the language. They will most likely check your sources of learning the language via the BI and I believe they test you in SABT or thereafter. If they hire you based on a language skill you will be expected to use it regularly, so not just anyone can say they are fluent or use language as a skill.

While the recruiter will know what the "critical languages" are for hiring, you can get a pretty good guess by looking at where NCIS offices overseas are located (on the main website, click on "Locations"). These would include Arabic, Farsi, French (for African nations primarily, not France), Chinese/Mandarin, etc. As far as how you qualify, again, probably a question best asked to an applicant coordinator/recruiter.
You'd be surprised how little hiring-related info is put out to agents in the field, unless they are working an active 2A/background investigation.

While it's reasonable to believe that if you're hired with a language skill that the agency will make use of it, don't think that has to mean they will use it immediately. I know an agent who speaks fluent Arabic, and he spent his first 2-3 years working general crimes on a base, where he had no need for using his language skills (on the other hand, I know several agents who worked military intel and went straight to counterintel billets). All comes down to needs of the service.

Thanks for the info ROS. I love that about the NCIS, you have so many options. Just because you are fluent in Arabic does not mean you must work in a specific field and you have no choice. It seems that all doors are open to you and you have many areas from which to choose.
I meant my comment about the use of language with regularity more towards the fact that I would assume you need to be proficient in the language, you cannot buy a language book/program and say you are fluent in a critical language.

In my opinion we need more people that speak Cajun. I was very surprised at how very few people could actually understand me. And for those of you wondering...yes it is a damn language.
On a serious note...English. English will suffice very nicely.
That is all.

Cajun,
I imagine that agents that speak Cajun are few in number since it is not really spoken outside of Louisiana. I cannot help but picture farmer Fran from the Waterboy.

If I had to guess...it would be at earliest January. As we enter the holiday season, it has been my experience that anything hiring-related all but comes to a stand still until the new calender year. Maybe this year is different and everything will be up tempo, but I highly doubt it.

I'm in, but am poor as dirt, how about ten cents? I was just told by a senior NCIS agent that they are now planning a FLETC class in February, which would require some notifications in the not-to-distant future. I don't know how big the class is going to be, but that's what I have been told. One of the other message threads from forums.officer.com are saying several people have been getting the call this month to report to their field office, which would validate what was said earlier about agents getting hired, working out of the office for a longer than normal time, and then shipping of to FLETC. Congrats in advance to anyone that gets picked up for February...assuming this really happens.
