    inquiring about federal departmental transfers

Hey everyone I've been coming to this site for some time now and was wondering about lateral transfers.Do they happen often and are there any limits as to which departments you can transfer to like going from BOP to let's say US Marshals.Being a us marshal is something I've always wanted to do I have the 4 year degree but was thinking of just trying to get my federal foot in the door. Right now I am a state c/o;Also is it common for one to go from state corrections to us marshals. Reply back any responses would be helpful.

There is no "transfer" from one agency to another. Getting your foot in the "federal door" is beneficial for 2 reasons. First, if you can get into a 6C covered job, it stops the clock for y ou (in terms of the age limit being 37). Then, often, there are jobs that are announced ONLY to current federal employees.

It is not real common that we have guys coming out of corrections to the USMS. It happens, but it is not common. Most guys have military and LE. If you want to help yourself out, finish your degree. Otherwise, you may or may not be qualified with the info in your post. You certainly won't be competitive.

    Sorry.

The only way to transfer to another agency is to apply for the position in the same manner as you would from the outside. As Switch said, you can apply as a status candidate for posts that are not open to the public.

Heck, it is near impossible to transfer from one office to another outside the Area of Responsibility within the same agency without applying for a position, at least within ICE!

We don't have that issue either. As a matter of fact, our agents are expected to move every 5+ years, overseas too!
