Question Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs job?

Every time I look at USAJobs.gov I see at least one position available for Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs. The offices are in towns I have never heard of. I am guessing these are on reservations? What do these guys do? What kind of 1811 gig is it? Are they only in these towns I have never heard of? Seems like there is always a position opened so just curious into knowing more about the job and maybe into why there is always an opened position. People use it as way to get another 1811 gig a few years later?

    Thanks,

I had the same curiosity as you did. This is what I gathered from reading multiple forum sites.
Most of the time you are alone, on reservation grounds.
Most of the special agents have Native American in their ancestry, even if it is at a fractional level.

From the postings I have seen, it appears that most of the openings are either in the mid-west or northern border states (Wyoming, SD, Montana).

Not an expert by any stretch but there is a lot more there than you stated, and greater geographic area. The BIA just closed postings LA and CO, and if I am not mistaken, WI and NY. Yes, they are located in more :remote" areas similar to those that would work for the USDA in (example) London, KY. Read the postings fully, they will give you greater insight to the what, where, who, why, how, etc. Call the region and ask about it, there are also a Sr member of the BIA that frequents this forum, search and ask, he seems like he will go the extra mile and has helped others.

BIA is an investigator position just like any other 1811. But their area, as stated, is on the reservation. The thing about any BIA position is that it gives preference to anyone who is American Indian. So if there are 100 people who put in for the position and only 1 is full/part American Indian they automaticaly go to the top of the list.
