    IEA-cleared and choosing a location

I have been cleared and now I have to decide where I want to work since the Miami field office has no openings and the wait is 100s of people long. I am thinking about Pheonix, AZ. Anyone know if I have time to make this decision? Does anyone know where I may have to best chance for Fugitive Ops..etc?

Also, after a few years as a IEA, what is the transition process to SA if I choose?

    Any advice will help..thanks!

I wanted Newark, NJ but it wasn't available. Therefore, I changed to NY and was giving an EOD on the phone. Try calling DHC to see what's available. And decide from there...there is no point in deciding on a location that still may not be available.

I did and there are several..2 positions in Arizona. What was your time frame between the phone call and your EOD....I just want to make sure I have enough time to find a place across the country and get moved before my EOD.

    1. Phoenix AOD includes Phoenix, Mesa, Florence, Eloy, and Tucson at this point. Mesa is small and means flights. Florence and Eloy mean detention, flights, and ground tranport. Tucson means going to prisons and jails. Phoenix has all kinds of things. The chance of getting Fug Ops, especially fresh from the academy, is nil.

    2. You likely won't have time to move before you EOD. You are likely to only get a 2 week notice. I got the call on a Friday afternoon and submitted my two weeks that day. The Monday after my two weeks ended I reported to the ICE office. Total elapsed time was 16 days. Best option would be to put your stuff in storage if single or dump it off on your significant other if you have one.

    3. ICE does not have an IA (Internal Affairs) unit. We have OPR (Office of Professional Responsibility). I have no idea about the time frame of getting in. If you are referring, by chance to investigations, read Special Agent, the time frame would be years regardless of when you put in for it. You wait for an announcement and put in for it like you did for IEA.

Thanks Sierra!..The two position available are Eloy and Florence. You helped alot. I am guessing that shortly after your EOD you are sent to the academy....It there time after the academy to move? Are you in AZ? If so, any suggestions of areas to live?...not to live?

You really need to do more research on ICE. No such animal entitled Investigations Agent exsists. Also there is no mechanismto transition to a Special Agent position, when you so choose. You'll have to apply, just like everyone else. OI & DRO, are essentially two different agencies, under the same umbrella organization.

A little research goes along way.

    Maybe IEA?

I just put in for the IEA job. What are the chances a guy like me getting the job since I do not speak spanish?

Will I have to learn the language in the academy like they do in the Border Patrol academy?

I have had it up to my eyes with flying all the time. My BUTT is killing me and I need something more to do do.

Not speaking Spanish is no problem. The 5 week course at FLETC is mandated if you dont, but it's not too bad. You will spend lots of time seated in the IEA position as well, just not at 3000 feet. Im assuming you put in for one of the status positions that are open. Which location are you most interested?

I am not sure what vacancy I put in for. I am not happy about a 5 week spanish class. I am not even sure I quilfy for this job. All I know how to do is sit on my butt all day, watch dvds for hours and hit on female passengers.

    Hmmm...you sound like a shoo-in for Supervisory IEA. :D

To qualify for a status position you need to be able to show that you were able to do the job of a 7 or 8 (we don't have an 8). Can you write reports? Can you research a case? It isn't that hard, we have CBP and BP come over all the time for the job. ;)

No way around the Spanish course if you don't speak it. The first three weeks will kill you, the last two aren't bad. SW border has heaviest need that I am aware of.
