    Iraq Question/Pay increase

I am a GS-5 right now I was only on the job for about a month out of academy when I got activated by the National Guard and sent to Iraq for the 3rd time. I know I keep some benefits when I am deployed but will I still get the one year promotion from GS-5 to GS-7 if I haven't been working? Does anybody know how that works? Just wondering because I am trying to figure out of I should buy a house with the money I am making over here but I don't want to get in too far over my head. I appreciate any feed back.

Yes, by law you will continue to be non-competitively promoted with your peers while activated.

^ What Stub said. I've got a coworker who got his GS-12 bump from GS-11 while he was deployed with his USN reserve unit.

Benefits to activated military reservists who also serve as federal civil servants

I didn’t have the time to provide more details when I responded previously. Here is some more information you may find useful with regards to activating while serving as a federal civil servant.

    1. Promotions while activated. Here is the language OPM’s uses, “Upon return or restoration, an employee generally is entitled to be treated as though he or she had never left for purposes of rights and benefits based upon length of service. This means that the employee must be considered for career ladder promotions, and the time spent in the military will be credited for seniority, successive within-grade increases, probation, career tenure, annual leave accrual rate, and severance pay.”

    2. Make-up TSP contributions. When you return to federal civilian service, at your discretion, you may elect to make up TSP contributions that you missed while activated. The government will match your make-up contributions, up to 5% (Agency Automatic 1% and Matching Contributions up to 4%). It is a no brainer. Each returning service member should be doing this.

    3. One week of paid administrative leave for activated reservists. Although there has been a change in administration, this memorandum is still valid. It provides a returning service member who activated in support of GWOT with 5 days of uncharged leave when returning to civilian federal employment.

    4. Paid health premiums. If you meet the conditions set forth in the 6th question on first link below, which it sounds like you do, then your employer may cover your FEHB premiums for up to 24 months. This is in addition to Tricare.

    5. Each fiscal year (FY), a federal civil servant rates three weeks of paid military leave if they are in the Reserves. A service member can carry over three weeks of military leave each FY. This is in addition to your annual leave / sick leave accumulations. It is basically: legal double-dipping.

Question? I am with TSA and I heard if I get deployed that the agency will have to make up the difference of my salary that I will miss while being deployed.

Anyone know what I am talking about?

I believe from what my HR unit were saying, the government is trying to put this into affect as of recent. I just recently returned and my agency is in the middle of trying to implement it, but being that its a government agency, HR claims that it's gonna take a long time. So, no difference in pay for me =/. I guess since most of the local and state LE agencies provide this for their officers, the govt. is catching on. Apparently this has already been signed off on, but its up to each respective agency to decide how they're gonna put it into play. If I were you, just contact your FO's HR personnel and talk to them about it. What I learned from this most recent deployment was, the govt's not gonna give you SH*t unless you go to HR kicking and screaming.
