    Looking for a good read

Just looking for a good read that is enjoyable and offers a lot of insight into an agency. Not looking for a particular agency book, any will do. Just a book with a good rating and recommendations. Thank you.

Here are some which I have already read that I enjoyed...

"The FBI Career Guide" by Joseph W. Koletar is a great book. Lots of information also has personal accounts in it.

"To be a a U.S. Secret Service Agent" by Henry M. Holden is a good read. Very informative and a good outline on how to prepare for the process.

"The Deporter" by Ames Holbrook. I liked this book a lot. It describes the "real-life" troubles deportation officers face trying to do their job.

That's a really good book. I was working a midnight shift one time which was very slow. I sat in a parking lot and read the whole thing from cover to cover in one night.

I've read "Under and Alone" as well; it's a very good read. I don't know how he made it out of some of those situations.

BP: I had a DO tell me to read it after I expressed interest in the DO job. I had no idea how tied their hands are day in and day out. At least you'd have a decent schedule and make good money, otherwise it'd be a tough job to deal with. Let me know what you think.

I'm told that most DO's these days come from IEA's, but it's a separate job with somewhat similar duties. The DO position, from my limited understanding, has been around quite a long time when IEA's are rather new. Think of a DO as a Lawyer/Cop/Diplomat.

Sounds like an interesting job. What department or agency are they under? Isnt that TSA? What is the name of them? I am looking around USAJOBS for them but havent seen them yet.

    Found the link below.

    TSA: Deportation Officer

    Thanks again.

Deportation Officers work for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within Detention and Removal Operations (DRO). Honestly, I'm not sure what TSA has to do with them. As for USAJOBS, I know they recently had some announcements posted, but I assume they are not currently hiring. Again, unless you've got a connection on the inside and someone knows you, it's tough to get in. Plus, I believe you have to have immigration training to even be considered, e.g. BP Agent, IEA, etc. As an aside, if you're an IEA, you work with DOs more often than most and if you're good at your job, you stand a better chance at making DO over someone with a better resume.

If you look at the announcement, at the top (underneath the position title "Deportation Officer") it says which agency it's under: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). That site seems to have positions under DHS (hence the tool bar that lets you select other agencies under DHS), not just TSA (which is one of many agencies within DHS).

As stated Deportation Officers are part of ICE DRO. DO's are Journeyman GS-12's while I believe IEA's are Journeyman GS-9's.

I don't think I've ever heard of a DO street hire they all come from USBP or IEA's. I've heard different sides of the story (depending on if they are conducting Fug Op's) but for the most part the Deportation Officer position is considered a great assignment and one of the best kept secrets in the service.

Journeyman GS-12's W/ AUO & FLSA and Monday - Friday with weekends and holidays off. Most non- fug ops DO's travel quite a bit.
