Question for ICE 1811s

I apologize in advance for the length of this question.

I am nearing the final stages of the ICE 1811 application process (woo hoo!). I received a call last Thursday (April 16) informing me of a May 24 FLETC date. The SAC office I wanted (and the one I got) involves moving about 1,000 miles. I have worked for the fed gov't for a few years, so I have leave accumulated. I plan to take two weeks leave in order to move and get set up in the new location (new driver's license, register to vote there, spend time with family + friends) before FLETC.

If I get the hiring packet when I expect to, I'll be giving my current job about three weeks notice (and two of those will be leave)...so really about one week actual notice. I don't have any outstanding projects so I'm not going to be screwing them over or anything.

Here is my concern, I've been doing a lot of reading in the federal section of this message board and came across a post with this quote:

Now I realize the above post is an old one, and that ICE had some issues back then that they appear to be past. However, I was already concerned about this possibility last week, and I asked a woman at the Dallas Service Center if this was a "firm offer" and if she's ever seen ICE rescind the offer and/or had something fall through after the FLETC date was assigned. Her answer was that "with the budget cuts and the current economy you just never know".

I'll be leaving my position the first week of May...turning in all my ID badges and creds, losing access to some systems, getting read out/debriefed, etc. So if I'm told a week before FLETC that xyz happened and I'm no longer being hired...I'll basically be screwed in a MAJOR way.

So what I'm basically asking the current ICE 1811s is: Have you ever seen anyone assigned a FLETC date and had the offer rescinded? If so, is it common, rare, extremely rare? Is it something that used to happen but doesn't happen anymore? Any other information, feedback, etc?

Has BIG ever seen an offer rescinded, yes. BIG himself has had an ofer rescinded, but not for budgetary reasons. BIG was offered a choice of four SAC's, to which BIG accepted one. An hour or so later, BIG was called & told his previous offer had to be rescinded, due to him being on an exclusive list for a fifth SAC. 5 weeks later, BIG was called & offered the position for the SAC for which he was on the exclusivivity list.

Beyond that, BIG hasn't seen nor heard of a someones offer being rescinded, due to budgetary restraints.

Does this mean it can't or won't ever happen, nope. If & when it does, BIG is sure it's rare.

Basically like a lot of other things in life, you have to take that leap of faith that your offer & class date will be there when you arrive.

Thank you for the information! I'm definitely going to take that leap of faith, I was just hoping to find out if having an offer rescinded once you have a FLETC date is as rare as I believe it to be.

Oh don't worry, I have read lots on here and other forums about really cutting back on recreational physical activities and to be in shape when you get there. I'm not involved in what appears to be the biggest culprit (basketball) but I am an avid SCUBA Diver. I have decided to stay topside until I'm done with FLETC because Murphy's law says that I'll get a tank dropped on my foot, or bang my knee, or get the bends before FLETC. Nope, I'm going to be Miss -lives in a plastic bubble- until I'm out

Like Big, I too have seen it happen. I know a guy who had a 3 month break from CITP and the ICE part of the academy. I don't know if that was due to budget or not. I believe I would have had the same problem(s) if I would have accecpted my offer from ICE as I would have been 1 week behind my friend at the academy.

Thanks for the reply BP. Do you know what happened with your friend during the interim between CITP and ICESAT? Did he go back to the FO and work on clerical things, or did he have to sit at home without a paycheck?

I don't work for ICE, but am an agent for another agency. We've had agents who had "limbo" periods between CITP and our add-on academy. When that happens, they go back to the FO and assist on investigations (they just don't get assigned them as case agent). They certainly don't go home and sit without a paycheck. While you have to complete your agency's add-on training to work their cases, once you are a graduate of CITP you are an 1811.

Im in a very similar situation. My EOD is early July with a FLETC date of the 14th. My last week will be leave due to my upcoming wedding. I personally will not be quitting or giving notice until I have the EOD packet in my hand with the firm offer. Even the lady at DSC said to hold off on giving any notice until the packet is on its way (probably not until june). Although retraction of an offer is very unlikely, you never know. I always err on the side of caution.

Yeah I wasn't going to give notice until I had the packet either, so I'm with you there. I've been told that packet is arriving this week. I was just worried about the "what if" scenario of having the packet, having the firm offer...and still being told after that, that oops sorry, hiring freeze, no training for you.

All the talk of Obama's budget cuts is making me nervous...but on the other hand you have Napolitano wanting to hire more ICE Special Agents, so hopefully we'll be safe

Got your PM that should be a cool FO to work out of but you will most probably do some Immigration type cases.

As ROS stated he went back to his assigned FO and helped out until he could go back.
