    USCG to FLEO

Hi everyone. I am nearing the end of my contract with the CG and I was looking into FLEO possibilities. My main question is what is done with my CG time? At the end of this contract I will have 10 years of active duty.

Will my time in the CG carry over? How will retirement work? Can I stay in the CG reserves as a FLEO?

    Thanks guys.

    Hey there,

I can only answer one of your questions with 100 percent surety. You can stay in the reserves.

Many many agencies will transfer our time over towards retirement (Some only include time as a BO but others will take years you were E4+ and others will include all military time). Really depends on where you go.

    Thanks for your service brother.

Your CG time will count towards your annual leave. So when you enter federal service you will start earning 6 hours of annual leave a pay period. then when you hit the 15 year mark (military + federal time) you start to earn 8 hours. Everyone else starts at 4 hours and then at 3 years goes to 6 hours & then they have to wait until they hit the 15 year mark to earn 8 hours. 8 hours is a great thing!!

Yes you can stay in the reserves as a federal LEO if you so choose. I believe that only USSS & FBI don't allow their agent to be in the NG or reserves but maybe that's changed.

For your 10 years to count towards your retirement you have to buy back your military time. I don't know exactly how they get the price but it's like 2% of the total money you made during the 10 years. Higher rank more $$ you have to pay back. First part of the process is sending a form to the CG finance center and they will check your pay records and tell you what you made during your time in the CG.

For example I did 7 years with USAF & USAF finance said I made $70K during my service (pretty sad right?? :() The total I had to pay back was around $1800. I felt it was worth it to add 7 years to my retirement.

The other thing is to buy back your time early as after 2 years federal service they Govt. starts to charge you intrest.

If you're going to stay in the reserves you'll probably be better off not buying back your time. Federal retirement & reserve retirement is better then the federal retirement where you buy back your time in service. Of course you would have to do enough time in the reserves to qualify for a retirement.

Another thing to remember is that if you buy back your military time it only helps on the back side. You can't do 10 years as a federal LEO and then retire with 20 years if you buy back your time. But you can do 20 years and retire with 30 years if you buy back your time.

    Any questions let me know.

    Thanks for your service!!
