    Next Massive Hiring Period?

    Hey Everyone,

I am a current undergraduate majoring in accounting with a minor in finance. I have interned at a police department a few times. Currently I am interning at CBP, GS303.

I graduate in a year and need a job. My question is... earlier this year, I saw most of the federal agencies were hiring like crazy, like the FBI, CBP, and others. I have been checking USAJOBS frequently and haven't seen that much hiring. I heard it was going to happen again, I just wanted to see if anyone has heard anything about that yet and/or know when it'll happen? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Steve

The FBI and DEA have been hiring continuously for some time now and they tend like accountants. I would imagine that trend will continue and they will have opportunities if you are interested. A lot of the future hiring decisions are going to depend on availability of budgeted funding and the pool of qualified candidates that the agencies "stockpile" during the current hiring initiatives. CBP will probably still be hiring. CBPO tends to have less open announcements. USSS has had an open announcement for quite some time and that will probably continue. I hear rumor that IRS-CI has an announcement opening up soon. A lot of times the announcement will read if you are graduating within 6 months and will possess the necessary requirements, you may initially qualify. In the IRS, they tend to like "seasoned" accountants that have had some real world accounting experience or prior LE experience. If ATF, USMS, or ICE is what interest you, become a master in patience as their announcements are far and few between unless you can get in under one of the special hiring announcements. NCIS is always accepting applications though they may not always have positions available. The short answer is yes, there will be hiring’s. Will they be mass hiring’s? Depends on the economy, President Obama's budget, and the need of the agency. The best answer is to live your life and keep doing things to make yourself a more appealing candidate. Your LE and CBP internships will certainly help you in the long run. I think most on here that are current 1811s will tell you that the college graduate hire in to 1811 ranks is rare. If you plan to use your accounting, do some time as an accountant in the working world. As an accountant myself, I can tell you real world accounting is completely different from textbook accounting. The CPA will also give you a real leg up if you are applying for FBI, DEA, or IRS. I have applied for several positions. I have a degree in Economics and a Masters in Accounting. I served 8 years in the USMC. I have made it a good distance into the process couple of times, but never obtained the Holy Grail due to hiring freezes, positions filled by more qualified candidates, etc. Whenever you are least expecting it and you are ready to accept your current fate, a tentative offer shows up in the mail and sucks you right back in.

    Next Hiring

USMC0844 sounds like the type candidate I looked for when I did recruiting- accounting degree plus military experience. Don't give up. DEA is hiring some accounting grads- they used to rely on IRS for stuff like forfeitures, money laundering charges, etc, but IRS cut back their task force participation so DEA hires their own now (plus some retired IRS guys on contract). I hear some of these new hires are right out of college. IRS-CI also hires some recent grads, also co-ops, some with language skills. Be mobile and keep trying.

With federal jobs, timing is everything. And, the candidate who is not offered a job in year 2, might have easily been offered a job in year 1 or year 3.

Isn't there an age limit of 37 &1/2 on hires for the FBI or other federal agencies?

    Yes

Due to the mandatory retirement at the age of 57 the cut off is 37. Except for USBP who now goes upto 40.

How that works for retirement?

    I don't know
