Looking to Become a Federal Agent

Hi Guys,Girls, I am currently looking into becoming a federal agent as a career either secret service or an FBI agent. what is required to become one of these is a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice required, what is the average salary for these two jobs. I am 18 years old and will be attending a University Next year hopefully. I didnt attend college this year because my High school kinda screwed me over wouldn't let me take the SAT's ACT's to get into a 4 year university, I am also in the process of Becoming a Volunteer Fire fighter. any information would be helpful thanks in advance.

Each agency has a helpful website with most of the information you want redily available.

You need to really work on improving your writing ability if you want ANY Law Enforcement position, let alone something in the Federal realm. What you wrote above does not present a very good picture of yourself based on grammar and spelling.

    I sure do.

Instead of asking others to do all your research for you, I suggest opening google and typing in "Secret Service Careers" and/or "FBI Careers."

(You can cut and paste what I wrote if that is too much effort.)

There have been a lot of threads on this, but they are hard to find as the site search engine won't let you search 3 letter words (and most federal agencies are referred to by their 3 letter acronyms in the threads). Most of the threads have been in "Federal Questions." though, so if you search through long enough, you will find more threads than you can read in a week on this subject.

Being a SA / 1811 is uber competitive, most new SA's have extensive LE/military experience and a BA/BS...they are not entry level jobs.

Join the military, grow up, get your degree, some training, and experience. Start making a long term plan, by 2018 you might have a shot at USSS-SA or FBI...not being a jerk, just providing reality.

Good luck, stay out of trouble.

Exactly right. The guy who gets an 1811 job right out of college is about the rarest bird there is. It happens, but it happens so infrequently that when it does happen, everyone talks about it.

They don't want you have have a degree in each those are degrees they would like to see the applicants have. I'd have to check & I don't know about USSS but I know that the FBI could care less for a CJ degree. Good degree for FBI (or any LE position) would be something like Computer Science with a minor in Accounting.

I know 2 people who applied with USSS, both had a degree in CJ.

At 18 you have plenty of time. Consider the military and college.
    Wrong door, buddy

what is required to become one of these?
A Criminal Investigator is required to investigate. Now would be a good time to start developing those skills and maybe start at each agencies website.

Most federal agents I have met have one (1) bachelor's degree. I don't think 4 years in college is "spending alot of time in school" when most other jobs that require a degree in the private sector also would require 4+ years of college. If 4 years of college is too much for you, you might want to look for another career, as law enforcement is a job with continuing training (i.e. on-the-job school) for the remainder of your career.

Oh not at all, they just worded it to make it sound like you need 3-4 different degree's in order to become a federal agent, I heard its a bit harder to become a SSA then it is a FBI agent.

My advice to you is to seek a job in local law enforcement (Police Department or Sheriff's Office). There, you will gain valuable experience that will make you marketable to federal agencies. More importantly, you might just find that you like it where you are and that you don't want to be a fed anymore. I just worked with an NYPD Detective who left the NYPD to become an FBI Special Agent. As I said, I just worked with him and he's an NYPD Detective. See my point?

Why not start somewhere that you can gain valuable experience while you examine your goals and interests? You might also get to see some "specialized" types of law enforcement agencies, and decide that you like what they do. By that, I mean Park Ranger, Forest Ranger, Fish and Game, Harbor Police, etc.
