For many agencies that offer SCEP positions to students, what type of clearance do interns acquire? Another quick question..what is the background investigation like? Is it a SSBI like officers must go through or is it a simpler investigation? Thank you for your help.

When I was a student intern with the US Attorney's Office I was given a confidential clearance and it was a minimal back ground check. Finger prints, and criminal history was about all that was checked. However, I did fill out the entire SF-86. It still only took about 5 weeks for mine to process. That is a lot faster than most officer/agent background checks. However, that might be different than what you are asking about.
