It was Spanish & Law at 6 months (1 month after the academy) and again at the ten month mark .

Those tests were really messed up. The law was pretty cut & dry but the most you could make on the Spanish was 60% (70% is passing). The other 40% had to come from the board.

Does anyone have any idea of how many new officers CBP is planning to hire off of the upcoming exam? Also, how long does the hiring process usually last (I know it can vary greatly.)? I live in New York and would like to apply for a position in southern California (If applicable on the next exam.). I spoke to a former CBP Officer that worked at Newark Airport in New Jersey. I asked him if he made alot of narcotic arrests (I had read that CBP Officers usually make more narcotic related arrests than arrests for other crimes.) and he said no. He said that at the airports they try to focus on deterrence by always being in the public's view and that it's not really a "hands on" law enforcement position. I suppose it makes sense that if people know they are going to be closely inspected when entering the country through an airport, there may be less attepmts to smuggle drugs through there as opposed to a land or sea ports of entry. Then again I know little about CBP or how people attempt to smuggle drugs or other contraband into the country, so I could be totally wrong. If anyone has any information on the questions or comments I posted, it would be greatly appreciated.

It all depends on where you work and how much effort you want to put in. If you go to NY/NJ and don't do a lot of narcotics seizures then obviously you're a lazy arse. We do focus on deterant but there is a lot of narcotics seized at the land borders, airports and seaports as well as money, guns, illegals, stolen property and a hunderd other classifications. If you are motivated and want to search you'll find stuff. Don't listen to retired people or those of us who are bitter. There are problems but the fact is the contraband is there and if you search for it you'll find it. Anywhere there is a port of entry or border there are people trying to smuggle stuff in. We don't all do big seizures every day but they are there. As far it not being "hands on LE" well, we aren't patrol officers and don't arrest for DUI and such but we do get thousands of arrests around the country on warrants as well as people smuggling everything under the sun. Our job is probably more "hands on" than a lot of other LE jobs because we tear apart cars and luggage all day, climb through containers and ships. The lazy guys who didn't want to put out the effort and hid at their computer terminals would be the first to say it isn't hands on... If you think you're going to sit on your butt and seizures will just come find you then yes, you may be disapointed. But if you can put out some effort and stay motivated this can be a great job. Especially if you can move around the country a little and experience all it has to offer.

chewy, ? for you. The fitness test listed on the web page wasn't hard. The only exception was the endurance needed for the 5 minute unaided timed step test. Are these laxer standards? When you mentioned the position was retirement eligible now, wouldn't it have rougher standards?

I have no idea what they require now... When I went through you basically had to be able to stand on one foot for a couple seconds and squat... So, I guess they would be harder compared to what they were :D

You are going to have a very difficult time for a few years. Your juvenile records will be obtained and reviewed so don't even think about "forgetting" about those issues. My advice is to get a steady job stay away from those who do drugs and get clean yourself. Apply after about 5-10 years of clean living and you should have an easier time of getting in. I would seriously consider going into the military for a few reasons. One you will be removed from you doper friends this helps you get away from the drugs. Two if you serve your time honorably, you will gain valuable experience and training. Three it shows a desire to improve your condition. Only join if you WANT to serve, otherwise you time will be hell and you will most likely not be able to complete you time honorably.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

Translation for the intellectually challenged: If the government screws the people too much, it is the right and duty of the people to revolt and form a new government.

    Cbpo

I received my tentative offer packet today for CBPO. I had an old test score that I submitted under the latest opening, so it looks like they are moving pretty quick once you have a test score.

I took the test about three months ago (Dec. 9) and I got an 88. I haven't heard anything yet, my preference is Florida. I guess the wait time depends on you geographic preference.

I scored a 90 on the test and my geo pref was Texas. My location could be anywhere from Midland to DFW and down to the border. Have two weeks from TO date to have packet submitted and then the VBT would be scheduled 6 weeks from receipt of packet.

So much for 6 weeks. VBT scheduled for April 7. The conditional offer said that the VBT would be scheduled 4-6 weeks from signed acceptance of the conditional offer. I received the letter for my VBT before I even had a chance to get my packet submitted.
