VA Police - GL Scale?

I have heard rumors that the VA Police will be going to the GL Scale within the next year or so and will have Law Enforcement retirement. Anybody heard anything about this? I did a search but was not able to find anything addressing this.

There's been rumors for years about changing the pay scale, and not just for the VA. I've heard they were going to do away with all of the different pay scales completely and use one scale for everyone. They can change it around as much as they want but I doubt anyone will see a pay raise out of it.

The next rumor is there will be try-outs for a national s.w.a.t. team as well. :rolleyes: Yes, that is another rumor that has been floating around for years.


There is nothing even close to official on the pay-scale thing. The VA takes forever to make any form of changes and part of that problem comes from how the individual facilities are managed.

Also, some facilities go by specialty pay, others go by locality pay. Again it varies from facility to facility. The specialty pay is always higher and good luck getting those guys to give that up in favor of an over all scale. The Unions (to include national) will step in and it will be a forever and a day fight. On an individual facility level –any changes made to the officers duties, pay, uniforms, etc has to be approved by the union. Imagine what kind of ruckus changing the pay is going to cause!

The next problem is not all VA officers are paid the same. Some facilities are GS 7s, some are 5s, heck I’ve heard as low as 4 (Palo Alto), but most are in the 6 bracket. Again this falls on the decision of each individual facility and what the director of the hospital is willing to pay his police officers.
