    USPP or USSS-UD

    Hey everybody,

I've posted a few times on here before, but let me give you my basic background information before asking my question. I am currently a senior at Penn State University and will be graduating in May with a B.A. in Criminal Justice. I've stayed out of trouble and have pretty decent grades with the exception of statistics (:mad.

My question is which agency is better for recent college grads, USPP or USSS-UD? I've heard great things about both agencies, and researched them. Thanks.

"Better" is subjective, and what's good for one person may not be the case for another. If you work USSS-UD, expect to do a lot of security-type work standing at a fixed post. There are opportunities with USSS-UD to do patrol, countersniper, SWAT, etc, but you won't be doing that once your boots first hit the ground of the White House after graduating FLETC.

USPP, from what I understand, does quite a bit of patrol work, and is similar to working for a large metropolitan police department. If I were to go with one over the other, I'd personally probably be happier working the duties of an officer with USPP, but that's me. I'd apply to both if you're interested and take the offer from whichever gives you a job first. If it isn't for you after working there for a couple of years, move on to something that fits you better.

    +1

If it were me I'd go with USPP.

    Former UD here.

Without reservation I would recommend USPP, IF you want to be a cop on the federal level, by far the best 0083 gig.

If, you want to play dress up and stand post than go UD/USCP/US Mint/etc. UD does have patrol division/FMB (I worked there) but if you are proactive you will get sent to the House. There are tons of good people over there, the problem is most (not all) leave for something better. There is a reason a ton of people quit every year.

If you are able, go to the House and ask the Officers what they think of the job, I will bet $100.00, 8 out of 10 will tell you to stay away.

When we did the "tours" of the different branches we asked the Officers for advice...they said RUN...thought they were kidding...they were not.

That being said, I would not trade my experience there for anything, great training and friends for life...the job stinks though IMO.

I can't speak from personal experience on this, but I have a friend who is in patrol with a local PD who worked USSS-UD before working here, and he said this is the very reason he left USSS to become a local cop.

Pre OK City, USSS-UD was very much a police force.

Since then it's all about security/protection...not enforcement. If you want to be pro-active don't waste your/USSS's time and apply elsewhere.

One of my classmates at FLETC came from USSS-UD and hated it. If you are happy sitting at a post, then it's for you. From my understanding, there is a very high turnover rate with UD.

Aply for any and all 1811 positions and if they think you're too "green" then go the local cop route first. You won't regret it.
