    Waiver for NRPT (FPS-LESO)

    Hello everyone,

I am a Law Enforcement Officer for the US Forest Service. I have been looking into trying to get a FPS-LESO job. I have tried to look up this info and I have also called Laguna. The female I spoke with on the phone really did not know about waivers if there are some. I know that you have to complete UPTP at FLETC. Do you guys think they will Waiver my Natural Resource Police Training or would I have to go back to FLETC if I were to get hired.

I'm assuming since you're asking about "going back to FLETC" that you've been there before, for Natural Resource Police Training? I haven't heard of that training program, is it the training that is now called Land Management Police Training (LMPT)?

Either way, I'm not sure if you're going to be able to get that waived. I'd certainly try to do so, but your agency may require everyone who hasn't attended UPTP (basically a mixed police academy for various federal uniformed officers). They may see you're NR training as too NR-related, and not training you on the job you'll do at FPS. I'd still ask to see if you could get it waived, as both UPTP and LMPT are basic police academies for uniformed federal officers.

It doesn't hurt to try, however I am pretty confident that unless you went to UPTP or MBPTP, you will have to go back again.

I had a whole big " I smell something fishy" rant, based on your post history, but have chosen to go the "kinder, gentler" route.

You probably will have to go back for UPTP, as FPS is not a participant in the NRPT/LMPT curriculm (sp?) review and may have other areas of concentration that they require from FLETC that you did not get while attending NRPT. Just like USFS is not a participant in the UPTP curriclm review...
Case in point. In my NRPT class, we had several former deputies, a former BP agent, two former air marshals, a former Coastie, a former GA Bureau of Investigations agent and, of all things, a retired Marine Corps gunnery sergeant. Uncle Sam decided that all of these people, regardless of prior training, had to attend the Natural Resources Police Training program. One of my FTEP trainees a year ago was a former BP line supervisor, who had to go through LMPT.

Yes ROS, NRPT and LMPT are one in the same, with some twists added....

I had a former BP agent go through the Basic Police program with me when I worked for FPS. I thought for sure he would not have to go to FLETC again, but I was wrong.

Once again thanks for the post. I had always understood that I would have to go back to FLETC if I were to which jobs. But I have not even got hired yet. So I will have to get hired first. I just really wanted to see what you guys thought...

Why would you leave the FS for a non-covered position, with no take home ride , no AOU, and go to a place with very limited jurisdiction ?
I had a guy in my LMPT who left Air Marshalls was a 12 with FPS, and came over to the Forest Service... he was suoervisor as a 12 so FLSA exempt.
So look at it this was 1.7 % vs 1% retirement per year.
AUO 25% vs None ( with gov contributions including pay match of base + auo)
Take home ride with up to 35 mile commute paid.
    Paid lunches
Details if you want to make great money.
Title 21, 36, 43 ,18 and if you are lucky state authority. vs minimal.

Just curious why you would go instead of apply for an agents position ?

I am not sure if you were talking about FPS, but if you are, though they aren't covered, you are non competively promoted up to a 12 as an Inspector and all FPS officers have take home rides. That by itself is enough for me and makes up for the AUO and the .7 % difference in retirement.
