    FPS or IEA????

Im a current IEA and just got an offer with FPS as an Inspector. Taking the FPS gig would mean giving up my law enforcement coverage and not having any AUO or overtime. FPS is a journeymen GS-12. I make rougly what a GS-12/1 makes as a current GL-9 with overtime and AUO. Having said that, it would take me two full years to get to the GS-12/1 with FPS. The FPS job is in the city I wanna go, so it's got me doing some "soul searching". I really need some input from you guys.

You know that you are highly unlikely to be able to transfer offices as an IEA. It can be done, but it isn't likely without a hook.

If you stay an IEA, you get to keep your AUO, OT and 6c. You will stay a 9 with the chance of going to 11 at some vague point down the road. You will not go higher without promoting or 1811, both actions would result in you no longer being an IEA. You will also stay in TX.

If you go with FPS, you get the 12 and get to go home.

Is 6c worth that much to you?

That's just it, I had aspirations of becoming an 1811 one of these days. The clock is stopped as of now and im approaching the age cut-off. If I were really somewhat sure that we would get our 11's, I would stay for sure.

Always think about your long-term goals when considering career moves. If the clock is stopped for you as an IEA and your goal is 1811, then why are you even considering FPS? Look at the big picture. I know a desirable city is a big draw, but is it big enough to give up 1811?

Exactly. Plus, good location aside, is working for FPS a job you'd like to do over being an IEA? Work satisfaction goes to more than just making your 8+ hrs a day go by better. Work encompasses at least a 3rd of your life, count frequent overtime and it can be even more. Is FPS actually a job you'd want to do and retire from? Just something to consider.

Personally I'd go FPS. Take the Inspector spot and wait for an 1811 slot to open.

FPS just had an announcement open for a bunch of 1811's in the Northeast.

I'm not too sure how much they do in terms of investigations, but it's just a thought.

ICE OI seems to hire a good number of IEA's into their SA ranks. FPS, on the other hand, doesn't have a lot of 1811 positions, and from what I've seen, doesn't hire often. That coupled with losing one's 6c retirement would probably be enough to keep an aspiring 1811 from jumping ship, but you got to do what's best for you and your family (whichever that is for you).

Yeah, the recent FPS 1811 openings were posted on USAJOBS, and the agency listed was ICE.

When you opened the announcement however, it stated the agency hiring was FPS.

    FPS falls under ICE.
