    Dss

I had the pleasure of assisting DSS yesterday with a protection detail of a "visitor" to NY. Let me just say i was not very familiar with the federal divison however I was most impressed with their operation on their part. Anyone who knows anyone in DSS be sure to tell them that I thought they were top notch!(I'm sure Joey knows a few) .Just figured I would post it for 2 reasons 1) I thought it was very cool and 2) it was nice as a young cop to have been put into a detail such as that!

I've watched a documentary on the Diplomatic Security Service and I must say I was very impressed. It's cool you have first hand experience with them, though. Wish I could say that. :D

I also saw a documentary on them it was very impressive to say the least.

I'd assume that is a very difficult job to get?

The interview process called the "Board of Examiners" or BEX for short is one of the toughest in the FEDS IMO. If you do pass however (and not many do) you are pretty much "in" pending medical, background etc.

DSS is a great gig especially if you are single and want to see the world and live abroad. It is however very tough on families, and I know a few former DSS who just couldnt take the brutal travel anymore.

If you are interested they usally post openings once or twice a year, you can log on to the state dept. website and sign up for alerts for future postings. The first step is an online exam if you meet the basic requirements.

    +1

I know a former USBP guy who took a job with DSS and he really likes it but he's got like 5 years in and hasn't been stationed state side yet. spends all his time is a "stan" country. And at that travels ALOT!!!! I know he likes it but it's very hard on the home life. Kind of like being with USSS during an election year but in a different country.

Last summer when I was at FLETC I spoke with a guy (who was a former SEAL) who was going through their academy and he told me that DSS now likes to post new agents state side for the first 2 years. I don't know how true that is.

I've heard that the board is very tough.

    All smoke and mirrors! ;)

First off, Roger Dat, I'm glad you had a good experience with our NY office on a protective detail. Our NY field office is a pretty large office for both investigations and protection. Some of our agents recognize the huge asset of having local law enforcement participation in our protective details, and it's nice to hear that they reached out and requested your department's assistance.

Secondly, there are a few threads on this forum about DSS and the application process. If anyone is interested, then I would suggest doing a quick search for the threads... they've got some good information and some tips for applicants.

If you'd like to see some video footage about DSS, then there are a few clips if you use google and search their video section with "Diplomatic Security" (Keep the quotes).

The travel is rough, but a huge opportunity as well if you're interested in it. If you're married, then make sure your spouse is equally interested in the travel before you bother applying.

**First tour assignments typically place agents in domestic field offices for 2.5 years**

They pick agents to do protective details at random. We've got a former DSS agent in my office, and she worked a protection detail in Poland. The detail, picked at random, was all black. They found out the hard way when they got there that Poland's sense of racial equality is nonexistent, as they were refused service in several locations and restaurants. Maybe someone should have checked into that. :D
