Will I make GS-11 as a new hire?

    Hello guys,

Got a couple questions for y'all.
I have been in the Air Force as a Security Forces member (military police) for 5 years now. I get out next year with 6 years under the belt. I have a A.S. and hopefully have a B.S. by the time I get out. I noticed a position with ICE for a Physical Security Specialist (LESO/CANINE) starting at GS-9. With my current status will I be able to apply for this job or will it take more? I would really like to be a K-9 officer, is this position a "suck me in" just to get me to apply as a Physical Security Specialist or will I actually be a K-9 handler. One more thing; is the ICE training like boot camp where you march around all day and the instructors yell at you? Just want to get a good insight what what it's all about. Thanks in advance!

Before I answer your questions, let me answer the question in the thread title: I doubt VERY seriously you will be hired by ICE as a GS-11. I attended CITP with new agent hires for ICE/IO, and even those with prior federal experience and masters degrees go hired at the GS-07 level. Expect no higher than this, and be extremely happy if you do happen to get higher than this with ICE.

Can't answer that. Apply and find out.

Again, I don't work for ICE, so I can't answer this.

Not sure about PSS training, but ICE DRO training is very paramilitary. They stood outside the cafeteria at FLETC in formation every morning, which was reminiscent of police academy for me. ICE SAT training for SA trainees was pretty PT-intensive, but that was after CITP, and only "boot camp-like" during PT sessions. No uniform inspections, marched cadences across campus before class, or PT demerits for the behavior of knuckleheads in the class.

Just to add to what ROS said, ICE just started hiring GS-9's if you have a masters or several years of experience plus a bachelors. Very, very few start as an 11 that arent lateral transfers. I think you have to have a PhD to qual for it education-wise.

Depending on the position, if you start at a 7 you should be an 11 in a few years as long as there is the promotion potential.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but I believe the PSS postion is with the Federal Protective Service, a non-immigration component within ICE.

FPS was formerly with GSA guarding their buildings and properties until the creation of DHS.
