    U.S. Marshals Service Hiring

This thread is dedicated to hiring for the U.S. Marshals Service.

This is a thread that all hires: Shining Star, Coop, FCIP can come to interact and talk about the process, and training.

I am not sure if any of you have been over to 911jobforums but there is a comprehensive hiring thread over there. The only problem is you have to pay for the service, so only a few people are involved in it. This will be the same thing, with the addition of some seasoned USMS veterans to chime in.

Feel free to post up who you are and where you are at in the process etc. Give as much or little as you want:D

    Questions Regarding Hiring

The only current ways to be picked up are thru the Shining Star Program, Coops, and FCIP.

I am not well versed on the Shining Star program so other more experienced guys can chime in with aid for that topic.

If anybody is interested in the status of hiring please check out:

    http://www.usmarshals.gov/

    For FCIP:
    http://www.usmarshals.gov/careers/fcip.htm

    http://www.usmarshals.gov/careers/fcip_faq.htm

You may contact your local recruiter from the information on the website. Just recently there was an informational meeting in San Diego. I am not sure if that was posted on the OPM website or just on the USMS website.

    Keep your eyes open!

    Coop:
Contact your college or university to see if the Co-Op program is being offered.

There's also an e-mail feature on the USMS website that will shoot you an e-mail when there are employment updates. I don't know how well it works, but it wouldn't hurt to sign up.

Quick question: Do the 0082's make double-time for OT? Secondly, is there a lot of OT available or is it dependent on the individual office? Thanks.

LMAO @ double time! Who makes double time for OT? They get time and 1/2. However, the available OT is dependant on the district's budget, ability to manage resources/personnel, and desire to give you OT.

In other words, do not count on it. You may get it in some places, other places may give you very little.

    Thanks for the info.

Is AUO a factor at all? I heard talk about it as well. I'm not sure if or when it comes into play.

When it comes to all of this stuff, I really don't know much about it or how it all works.

AUO is old-school for the USMS. It will not come into play. Instead, you will get LEAP when you get to 1811.

    Thanks for your help.

If I get picked up at all it will most likely be on the border. OT is a good possibility.

You came to the right place.

In my district, over the last 12 months, I averaged 6 hours of OT per week. As Switchback offered, there are a number of variables which influence how much OT an 082 may receive.

Don't count on more OT in a border office. I have a colleague who is on a special assignment in a border office and is not getting any OT. This is unusual.

Although this does not apply to all new hires..

The OT rate is capped at the GS-10, step 1 rate so if you are a GS-7, step 9 or higher or GS-9, step 5 or higher, your OT rate is capped at the OT rate of a GS-10, step 1. If you meet these conditions, this results in an OT rate less than time and half. I learned the hard way.

Here is the OPM link on OT:

    https://www.opm.gov/oca/pay/HTML/FACTOT.asp

Although we do not rate AUO, 082's do rate FLSA.

The OT is all voodoo. I get almost a dollar more per hour for hours worked beyond 10 hrs. Scary stuff. Ah well... no biggie... I love work too much to dwell on it (...and usually I am with my SOG brothers when getting OT. They make it worthwhile).

Hey, I really appreciate the help. That OPM site was pretty good. I'll research the FLSA thing a little more when I get home, because I'm not sure what that is just yet (a guaranteed amount for OT work?).

I'm not sure if I should start another thread for this, but how much should I expect to take home as an GS-7 0082 and as an 1811? One of the big pulls with being an 1811 is making $100,000 in 5-6 years, but a breakdown that I found on another site had that $100,000 widdled down to pennies after TSP and taxes, etc. Any help?

I tried to explain all of this to my wife, but realized mid-conversation that I really didn't know enough about it.

OK, heading off to work...Gotta love 3rd shift.

No g ride as an 082. Probably, as an 1811... depends on office, availability of cars, etc.

    Pay considerations

    OPM guidance on FLSA:

    https://www.opm.gov/flsa/

Bottom line: It typically amounts to under $20 of taxable income per pay check.

2008 OPM GL locality pay tables:

    https://www.opm.gov/oca/08tables/indexLEO.asp

Navigate to your projected geographic area for locality pay. Determine your grade and step. For an 082 just add OT / Night Diff / FLSA to the base salary rate for that grade and step. To determine your hourly rate, take your annual rate and divide by 2087. For an 1811 just add 25% to the base salary for LEAP. By the way, our pay is capped at a GS-15, step 10 (except when certain conditions are met) so there is pay compression as a GS-14 with LEAP.

In most cases, not all, but most cases, with the USMS you will not make more than 100K in 5-6 years unless you calculate in anticipated annual pay raises between 2008 and 20XX, and the eventual benefit of no commuting expenses.

    Some ordinary pay deductions:

Federal Tax (tax rate depends on # of exemptions and salary)

State Tax (tax rate depends on state, # of exemptions and salary)

Social Security (always 6.2% of income minus pre-tax earnings such as medical and dental premiums)

Medicare (always 1.45% of income minus pre-tax earnings such as medical and dental premiums)

Medical Premiums (cost varies by plan)

Dental Premiums (cost varies by plan)

    https://www.opm.gov/insure/DentalVision/index.asp

Vision Premiums (cost varies by plan)

    https://www.opm.gov/insure/DentalVision/index.asp

Life Insurance Premiums (cost varies by plan)

    https://www.opm.gov/insure/life/index.asp

Thrift Savings Plan (contribution amount is up to you, but you're nuts not to contribute at least 5% because the G matches 5% up front)

    http://www.tsp.gov/
    https://www.opm.gov/fers_election/ri_90/f_tsp.htm

FERS Retirement Contributions (always 1.3% of your base income)

    Switch,

Never thought about the G-ride situation. Nice.

    Stub,

Man, I'm in debt to you after that post. I don't have time to go over it that well right now, but rest assured I will when I wake up. I appreciate your time very much!
