And no we don't. But every one of my co-workers applied to help people! The desire to HELP is why you go into this field, not the pay. And before you cry about money and benefits, I suggest you check yourself. There are a large number of people on here who got paid $10K in 6 months while being NYPD recruits, in the MOST EXPENSIVE CITY IN THE U.S.!

First of all I was talking about my situation and not the NYPD recruits. Nobody was crying, only comparing wages local vs. federal. I was stating that I was rethinking it because of the pay-cut I would have to take for approximately six years. I don't find what is so hard to believe that I have a current mortgage to pay for on what my salary currently is.

That is dedication and somebody I want to work next to...somebody who is here to help people, not focused on the check. Nobody goes into LE to get rich.

Again I knew the pay going in and I am fine with it. I was contemplating a change and commenting at the facts of the pay, and I continue to be attacked on this forum. You are obviously someone who does not want to help all people only those you select. Basic law enforcement is to help all, and put your personal feelings and ideologies aside.

And you are obviously from the younger generation of 20 somthings who think this world owes them something and have no idea what hard work is or that the good things in life never come easy. Guess somebody does not take pride in making sacrifices and working hard to accomplish dreams.
Here we ago with the "ME" generation thing again, you don't know me to talk about what kind of pride I posses. I come to work everyday balls to the wall, never taken a sick day and I am the most productive member in my platoon in every category. I have worked for three different departments, whom all are happy to have me. In my evaluations my supervisors described me as ambitious and hardworking. So you may think you know what type of person I am but you have no clue. I could care less who you would rather work next to, I requested information and I was met with childish, unprofessional, arrogant comments. So if you want to continue to play these games or try and "bully" me go ahead, I can stoop to your level, or at least try.

Also "Joey" you sound like the kettle calling the pot black from your post in 2004. If you don't remember here let me refresh your memory: http://forums.realpolice.net/showthread.php?t=58501 (post#7)

Seems you were going to be pretty unhappy with the possible pay cut you were going to take from a FAM to an 1811 spot. So how is my situation any different? Many NYPD recruits get by on much less what was your problem?

Would you all kindly take this elsewhere so the content of this thread can continue to focus on U.S. Marshals Service hiring?

This thread will have to get back on topic, or this thread will have to go to The Cornfield.

Now don't go paying attention to detail, Peach... that seems to be on the only crutch he has to stand on.

...errr, I mean, how's that hiring coming in the USMS, Smcc360? :D

I am somewhat new to the site. This is my first post here.

I am intrested in the Marshals Service and am trying to do research.

I have searched through archives on this site as well as others and found that people pretty much focus on the first 3-5 years. I obviously know about fugitive apprehension but what other things can DUSM's be doing after 3-5 years. Thier website alone covers witness protection, building security and managing assets to name a few.

Can anyone go a little into detail about these additional duties and wether most DUSM's like them or not?

    Thanks

Luckily, most every duty has DUSMs who enjoy doing them. I'm a fugitive type and many of the other things would drive me crazy, but to each their own. Some specialties include:

Judicial Security Inspectors. We have several types of Inspectors who specialize within this field as well and it's a lot more than "building security". These inspectors are specialists in all aspects of security... personal and physical. They do threat assessments on the judges and judicial family. The also do assessments and recommendations on the physical security of the courthouse, judge's residences, and other government facilities. Some also act as liaisons between the USMS and the judges. They may set-up and supervise protection details when necessary.

Our Investigative Operations Division is full of an assortment of Inspectors. Some are assigned to regional fugitive task forces. Others, while often co-located with the regional task forces, are tasked with other, more specialized tasks.
-There are Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Inspectors who work and coordinate OCDETF cases and initiatives (big drug and organized crime cases, usually worked in conjunction with other agencies).
-There are positions coming out very soon that are dedicated to sex offender fugitives, established by the John Walsh Act.
-Also, within IOD, there are Technical Operations Group Inspectors. They are DUSMs that are specially trained to handle the electronics side of fugitive apprehension.

We have people assigned full-time to our Special Operations Group. It's a militaristic chain of command all the cadre being trained in all the SOG specialties. Some run teams, others run other aspects of the operations.

There are positions at FLETC. These instructors are supposed to be on a rotation that has them staying at FLETC only a short time before moving back out to the field. This is done as an attempt to keep things the instruction more in-line with how things are on the street.

WitSec Inspectors. They handle all aspects of what is often referred to as the "Witness Protection Program." We call it "Witness Security".

Inspector positions are promotions. Now, as a plain old DUSM, or POD , there are also many niches to be found, even if not as a dedicated Inspector. Some collateral duties are more full-time than others, depending on the size of the district, the actual requirement of the tasks, etc. Some of these duties include:
-Jail inspections. These DUSMs inspect jails that are contracted by the USMS to hold prisoners, ensuring they meet our qualifications.
-Fit coordinators. These DUSMs administer fit tests to new applicants as well as current employees.
-Firearms Instructors. They administer firearms quals within the districts.
-Asset Seizure. These DUSMs ensure that properties seized are properly maintained and accounted for.
-Communications Officer. They maintain communications equipment/systems.
-Motor Pool Officer. Assist with maintaining all aspects of the vehicle inventory.

Now, while not inspectors, many districts have guys assigned (in a full-time status) to district or regional fugitive task forces. Also, some DUSMs just seem to turn into the "go-to" guys for WitSec or Judicial Security assignments when those guys need a hand from district personnel.

    Promotions to Inspector?

SwitchBack, what is the promotion process for Inspector like? Do you need seniority, education, training etc?

While an Inspector is a promotion, currently the regional fugitive task force Inspectors are GS12 slots. You still meritoriously promote to them with a resume and a statement of investigative experience, but it is very different from promoting to a GS 13 job.

Some Inspector positions, such as WitSec and TOG are GS12/13 jobs. I think the applying for those positions are much like preparing for the aforementioned Inspector position. The only difference is that you go to a GS13 (Senior Inspector) after a year or 2 (I think).

Then, you have positions that are announced as Senior Inspector or Supervisory Inspectors. These positions include supervisors on the regional fugitive task forces, OCDETF Inspectors and a whole slew of HQ IOD personnel. Since these positions are a supervisor grade, you must go through our meritorious promotion process, which includes a merit promotion exam every 2 years and having a current promotion package submitted. The package is a very lengthy submission, including biographical and educational information, as well as a series of 1 page narratives, explaining your experience in a variety of areas.
