haha, as it stands now...that's correct. Don't worry, you're not too far out of the loop...it's fairly new and the guys in my class didn't find out until after we graduated when it was confirmed through a chief. We shall see what becomes of it. How's the weather up north? I believe it was about 80 here today

Hi BNTF. Are you a Deputy U.S. Marshal? Is your head as swollen as Switchbacks?

    year 4 GS-9 step 2
    year 5 GS-9 step 3-upon completion of 9 step 3, you become 1811.

If you start out at a GS-7, then you have 4 years to make 1811, which is the boat I am in. I am not sure how/if this will hold up as it creates an even longer road to journeyman, but it is what it is. Take it or leave it as they say.

Right now, supervisors/inspectors are 13 and above. Journeyman is only a 12 in USMS. Looks like the big bosses are trying to change it, I know there's a big push for it. But the older deputies will tell you they heard the same thing over the years.

I hate to say it, but relocation is most likely going to be in the cards for someone who wants to come on the job. Especially if you're coming from the Midwest, as FCIP will probably not hire out of that area for a long time if ever- with the exception of Chicago, whose district was not included in the original 10 FCIP districts.
Very disheartening, even at a GS11 in my area i would have to get to step 8 to make what I make now. I may have to rethink this though I could prob make up the pay in overtime but 8 years is a long time. But like you said, take it or leave it.

Remember that, when you hit 1811, your salary goes up 25% with LEAP. So a GS 11 is a GS11 salary + 25%.

Well, borninblue, I guess it's just not worth it for you... just go look for another career then. I hear accountants can do ok... but you will lose cool-points for the pocket protector (as opposed to duty gear). We all know that everyone goes into LE for the gear, high pay, and respect.

And. borninblue, how old are you? You'd think, with a name like borninblue, you were really wanting to be an LEO, but this pay thing seems to surprise you. I find that odd... almost as odd, as you making greater than $85k/year (that's about what a 11-8 makes... not that ANYONE ever goes to 11-8 in the Marshals Service) at, what I would interpret to be from your posts, someone in the mid 20s at best.

Seriously, I don't see how someone would survive on a measly $70k as a GS11-01... or a laughable $90K when you get your 12. It's a rough life enduring the cheese lines. FWIW, Fed 1811s are paid better than most LE and few would say they (us) are underpaid. Luckily, not everyone shares your opinion. In fact, most go into LE DESPITE the pay.

Go somewhere else for sympathy, regarding your poor, disheartening situation.

If you feel you need to rethink this, don't bother. Find another line of work to consider.

I started out as a GS6 step 1 in Arkansas making 29K a year. I bought a house, paid the bills and held a family together. Now I'm a step 4 in Michigan making just under 45K and still making ends meet without any problems. The big difference, I didn't get into this line of work because of the pay.

Bluelightz I already am in the LE line of work. Rethinking applying was due to the pay and the length of the steps. But I see most of you most think alike, with the I am better than Christ mentality.

Have no worries. I am not so insecure that I need to eradicate the place of those who do not share my opinion. I would prefer to engage in discussion.

Obviously, that is not what you are in for, replying only with a comment about you wishing the federal government would "offer us more professional employees". Most would beg to differ. The competition is stiff enough that the federal government has a the ability to pick and choose whom it wants. In doing so, many would argue that they offer the services of very professional employees... many of whom do the job for more than just a paycheck

FYI, most of us on the inside prefer NOT to work with those who seek nothing more than a paycheck. Of course, I am not speaking for

Like Switchback, I have the star on my belt, and for the last 21 years I have been very proud of it. After that statement I want to say this to ALL of the applicants on this board. The Marshals Service has many functions and fugitive investigations is one SMALL part of the job. If you give up that local PD job thinking that you will be on a fugitive unit right out of Marshal Service school you will be very disappoinited with the USMS. The rising prisoner population nationwide requires that many more DUSM's be in court. If you don't mind paying your dues by working court, serving papers, processing prisoners, and making prisoner movements this could be the agency for you.

In regards to pending 13's, since the service has reverted back to an "all 1811 workforce" the possibilty of journeyman level 13 for deputy working court 40 hours a week may very well be "pie in the sky". That being said, there are numerous non-fugitive specialties, ie. district threat investigator, judicial security inspector, witness security inspectors, etc., that do carry GS-13 level.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy being a CIDUSM and I have been in 3 districts from large to small. This is a great agency, but new hires need to come on board with their eyes wide open.
