I don't think the Adam Walsh bill had anything to do with candidates being "expititiously" push through the process. That has been in the works for quite some time.

I learned one thing a very long time ago: Don't try to make sense what the agency is doing with their hiring. You'll sooner find the truth behind Area 51 and the Kennedy assassination.

Im new to this forum. I am currently an 1811 with another agency. I have been for approx. 8 1/2 years. Prior to that, I was a cop for approx. 6 years. I applied for the 1811 USMS lateral opening in 2006. I took and passed my panel in April 2007. I haven't heard a thing. Eventhough I continue to call HR on a routine cycle. I have "thick skin", so can anyone tell me about my chances, if ever, getting on?

Sorry... you seem to qualified for the hiring process these last few years (at least when looking at the product).

    PM me.

good point. i knew it was in the works, but to be pushed through so quickly just to be stopped in our tracks, that theory was the only one that made sense to me. the next class is SLOWLY approaching so maybe these theories will be put to rest. fingers crossed!

Oh, by all means, keep your hopes up. I just thought you needed to know that there are far better things to worry about than trying to figure HQ out. It's a lost cause! :D

Blame me for having the intelligence to know better than to try and figure out what the reasoning is behind what HQ does when your efforts can best be served when trying to deal with the reality of things.

    Sog

What are the requirements as far as how long you have to be a U.S. Marshal before you can apply for SOG? Also, are they a full time team or part time?

We have full-time and part-time team members on SOG. The full-time team guys tend to be the cadre, running the unit. The part-time team guys are from all over the country. While full-time guys can be a bit more administrative, they still get out to lead on some missions. A nice thing our recent commander has done is to make every full-time guy go through all the specialty schools. The reasoning is that they have a much better appreciation for each specialty's position and they can more effectively deploy them on operations.

In order to be on SOG, you must be an 1811. Under the "new" hiring, that means that it takes about 3 years. When I was hired (as an 1811), there was also a 3 year requirement.

Thanks for the info. Are there certain degrees that the U.S. Marshals prefer over others? And about how long does the whole application process take?

No specific degree is better than another. They teach you everything you need in the academy.

Now, the hiring process really can run the gambit. When I came on, it generally took between 1 and 2 years. That was back when anyone with a 4 yr degree, 2.5 years of LE experience, or a combination of the 3 could put in for it. Then there was the Shining Star initiative that focused on military personnel ETSing and a great deal of it was done in 1 day, cutting the process down by less than half.

It all really depends on the hiring initiative. To be honest, I have no idea what voodoo is the flavor of the day right now. The days of just letting everyone apply and taking the most qualified seem to be gone.

Sorry, but I have no clue. I am not really up on that stuff at all. Try calling the local office and asking for the recruiter.
