    Us Marshal (fcip) Questions Help?

Good afternoon members OF Real Police Forums

I have been very interested in a career with the US Marshal services, and was told today that they are working with a new program, the Federal Career Internship Program (FCIP) Under this new program is how they will be selecting most employees to Federal positions. Any help with this would be great!
    Thanks guys/gals

Anyone have any info or experience with this program?

Is it hard to land an internship?

Do they offer them at all offices or only certain ones?

Now i am no expert by any means I am just going by what a recruiter told me over the phone earlier today....

According to the Marshals website, the program has existed for eight years. You can start at http://www.usmarshals.gov/careers/fcip.htm and contact one of the FCIP recruiters listed there. They are sure to have the most up-to-date information about the program that you are seeking.

Thank you for your interest in RealPolice.net.

The program is brand new. I hear that it is targeting very few offices (very large ones and some southwest border offices). Everything I heard about it would lead one to believe that there is some real voodoo in who gets selected (who you know, etc.).

Most of us who actually do the job are not real fans of what we get stuck with when it comes to the products of specific hiring initiatives (co-ops, interns, etc.). Open it up to everyone and may the most qualified get hired... but, that's never going to happen.

No kidding there! If USMS would open the floodgates just once and have an open competitive process, every other fed agency would go into fits from all the people they would lose!

There HAS been hiring from an open announcement... back when smcc360 adn I were hired. It's been a long time, though. It was terrible, working with guys who were SWAT detectives with active duty military experience and a degree who were not even allowed to apply...all the while we were hiring co-op students (often referred to as "walking holsters") with no experience or military.

Well I have no real LE experience, but I have 6 years Army National Guard and was deployed to Afghanistan for 15 months, and worked New Orleans security after the Hurricanes for about 5 months. I do go to school, should be graduating in December or so(Criminal Justice).
Are these things that they look at when i apply for the Federal Career Internship Program?
Should i apply for an internship this summer at the police dept. in my hometown?

Wouldn't know... I am not the recruiter type. And, with my distaste foe most everything that has come out of the intern/co-op programs, I would not be your best source of info on that either. Sorry. I will say that it seemed that most co-op hiring seemed race/gender specific.

why would you apply for an internship with your local police department if you are graduating in december? if you want to work for the marshals or any other federal agency, you need to acquire some experience. why be an intern when you get paid as a fulltime police officer?

Despite the 'intern' mis-nomer, the FCIP program targeted many experienced folks; both military and law enforcement ranks made/make up a large proportion of those who applied under that initative. The name 'Federal Career Intern Program' is a blanket Government program that allows agencies to have targeted hiring initatives. In fact, all of the people I am familiar with that went/are going through the FCIP program are current LE professionals, or Military folks, or have both.

Not to be confused with the Co-Op program, which targets current college students

    Drew,

Your right on target! When I left the FAMS for the 1811 world, I was hired under FCIP. Concerned, I was told by my current agency:
    1) It gives you a longer probation (2 years) thus they can make sure you "fit the agency" rather than the typical 12 months where you are in FLETC the first 6 anyways and learning when you come back for 6 months.

    2) It allows the agency much more leeway in looking at and selecting applicants. They can basically pick the guy/gal they want, over the one with the resume experience.

    3) FCIP allows for pay retention for employees. So a general announcement at GS-5/7/9 will make a GS-13 drop down, where the FCIP has greater leeway and allows pay retention. Thank goodness for that as I was a H band FAM who was looking at a drop of $50K. I ended up keeping every penny.

I know my agency is only hiring 1811's off the FCIP for the foreseeable future. We have hired 4 more after me and all were fed LEO's who applied.

I was not a student at the time but a current Fed when I applied and was hired under it.

    Fcip

Anyone can apply under FCIP. There is no way to tell how competitive you will be. It depends on what your competition is and how well you interview. Also, it is one of those programs where I concur with Switchback that there maybe no rhyme or reason to selections. It may be that one who seems much less qualified has a hook and gets the job.
