Hey everyone,

I am awaiting a phone interview for the FAM's...and although I know credit inquiry questions have been asked a million times (I've searched the past posts)...I wanted to know if you are given an opportunity to explain the delinquencies or is it just cut and dry? I started a business back on 06' and unfortunantely it folded this year leaving me with a heap of debt that I expected to pay off quickly!
I know that a bad credit rating will get you the thumbs down because of bribes and so on....so does anyone know if I would be able to explain the debt which might give me a better chance....than having an investigator seeing the bad record and give me the door? Thanks sooo much for any answers ;)

I haven't gone through any background check's yet, however one of my professors retired from the FBI a few years back and teaches a security clearance course now. He explained that it's important for everyone to know their credit score, and that at times someone may think their score is terrible when it really is not. I have a ton of student loans and my credit score is still really, really good. Check your credit score and see where you stand.

Also, when you fill out the SF-86 there should be a "comments" section that allows you to address any outstanding or questionable issues. In addition the investigator, from what I've read, may contact you for an interview to ask you questions about your situation; however I don't know how frequently that happens.

Even explanations though don't overcome the facts: A person in a large amount of debt may be susceptible to bribes and outside influence, especially one with a a security clearance rating. Not saying you would ever, but others have, and as we know, one bad apple ruins it for everybody.

If you are going to under go a single scope background investigation, you will be contacted and have an interview. If they say you have a clearence, but you have not talked to an investigator, you only have an interim clearance. I doubt you will receive an interim, due to the credit issues you have detailed.

I know its not what you want to hear, but it's the cold hard truth. Joey hit the nail on the head. My only other advice would be to go over all the issues with the BI at your first meeting and explain everything in detail to him. Remember, its not his call. He just documents everything and forwards it back to the agency. Bring documentation as well if you think it might help your cause.

Yeah, I already know that the only way for me to get cleared with this recent credit problem is with God...I thank you for your advice and Im just gonna give it to Him...I've had to have a federal clearance once before but I never had a problem with credit until my business collapsed...Thanks again! :D

I also have a question about backgrounds for those that have switched agencies. I had a background completed and favourably adjudicated by my current agency on January 2, 2008 for my current Federal job. When I apply for a new Federal job do they do the complete background again or will they use the one recently completed by OPM?

Move...it depends on if you have the same level of clearance or not. If you need an upgrade, i.e. secret to ts, you will need to be investigated again.

Otherwise you should be good to go unless the new agency gets a thorn up their.......
