Hey all

Well I seen a Summer Internship with the US Coast Guard, in New Orleans, and i am gonna apply for it.

My question's are:
1. Can someone work with them, as a civilian but do like policing type things(Federal)?

2. Do they have a Federal position career?

3. What o they do?

4. Is the pay good?

The only real civilian LE job the Coast Guard has is as an investigator. I'm not familiar with a summer intern program so you'd have to ask TPD.

When I was in (98-02) I don't remember any type of civilian intern programs. You may just have to call your local recruiter and find out the details.

The questions you have I can't help you with, however in my experience an internship has been a volunteer position doing the crap noone else wants to do. (Monica?)

A few things to consider:

Where did you see the Internship advertised? If not on the USAJobs or USCG site I'd be leary.

While I don't have any personal knowledge of internship programs, I imagine you'd either be at Sector New Orleans or the District 8 office in New Orleans. Either way, you won't be in any way, shape or form doing anything for the Coast Guard Investigative Service.

If you are thinking about a career with CGIS, their website can be found here: http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-o/g-o-cgis/cgis.htm . I am pretty sure they use the USAJobs site to advertise openings. As far as being an investigator goes, there are two ways to get there. Get hired as a Civilian agent, go through FLETC (I think) and then bloom where you are planted.

You can also enlist and make it up to E6 and apply to be selected. It's a competitive program to get picked up, and the folks I know that got selected were top notch.

If you decide those aren't for you, you can also be an Investigator in the Coast Guard Reserve. There are some hoops to jump through there, but basically have 3 years LE experience and talk to a recruiter. I'm going to look at that route in a year or so.

I don;t know much about the intern program, but ill try and answer some questions.

1) You can not do any Law Enforcement if you are not qualified. Inorder to be qualified you have to actually be in the CG.

2) Anyone in the CG can do federal LE. There is a specific Investigator rating, there is the CGIS (CG Investigative Service)

3)What do who do? Coasties that enforce federal laws, or CGIS?

4) It is the military, an E-4 in the CG gets aid the same as an E-4 in the Navy, Army, USMC, Air Force.
