    FAMS Questions

Hello folks, I've read through the posts the past few days and a lot of my questions have been answered...but I have a few of my own. I graduate in May with my BA in Criminal Justice, possibly with honors. I am very interested in the FAMS position, especially in NYC. I am concerned about my age (almost 24) w/ no LEO experience.
    Questions:
What are my chances if my resume is pretty good?
    When should I apply?
Is it relatively easy to get the NYC FO?
Do I have to live in the city? If not how far from NYC can I live?
For a first "real job" out of college is it a good choice?
When do I give my preferences on FO's? On the application?

Any info past/present FAMS could give me would be very appreciated!!! Thanks

You meet the basic quals so by all means apply. As to answer your questions:

What are my chances if my resume is pretty good?
    1. Impossible to say. Ive seen those with outstanding resumes get passed over for those with much less to bring to the table.

Is it relatively easy to get the NYC FO?
    2. If you live in the NY area (or list NY as a pref) then that is probably what you are going to get. Understand though that nothing is guaranteed.

    When should I apply?
    3. The announcement is open. If you want it go for it.

Do I have to live in the city? If not how far from NYC can I live?
    4. No, I believe you have to live within 2 hours.

For a first "real job" out of college is it a good choice?
    5. This all depends on what you are looking for. If you want to practice law enforcement on a daily basis, than no. This is not that type of job (see intheaircops post for more info). If you are looking for a foot in the door to the govt, good training, and a chance to see the world then yes.

When do I give my preferences on FO's? On the application?
    6. I believe there is a place on Avue when you fill out the app to list your pref.

Maverick, thank you for your info. I appreciate it very much. I think I'm going to apply today if I can get past the nervousness!

If by hoping for a short process your goal is at least a year, then there is a chance your dreams could come true! Know going in all fed processes, save for BP and some other 083 positions, take a while and for good reason. There are alot of steps put there for a reason and with applicants spread out all over the country, the coordination of efforts is sometimes non existant. The wheel at the "G" turns painfully slow, but if you are dedicated and stay focused, the reward will be worth it. Good luck!!

Slow is an understatement. I work for another DHS agency and my process under the old announcement moved much slower than some people that apllied at the same time or even after me. With the FAMS, every FO moves at their own pace. Just be really patient and look at other agencies as well.
